When we go to an all GPS based nav system, why would we need a transponder and an ELT? Won't the ADSB transmitter do the job of both?

Put this question to the FAA with no answer.

Now now, don't bother anyone with logic @Tom-D ... it's NexGen!

They never said they'd shut down "PrevGen"!

My feelings about this

Because we'll never go to an all GPS system. We still will have airspace where ADS-B out won't apply where Mode 3A is still relevant. Still will need an ELT for SAR purposes, which is completely separate from ADS-B

On the military side, several on here have expressed concern for the vulnerability aspect of using ADS-B. Even if the military gets all their aircraft equipped with a secure version by 2020, they'll still hold on to their traditional transponder boxes for Modes 1-5.

Remember that the majority of the airplanes being flown by people posting on this web board in the majority of the airspace they typically fly in throughout the country will not be required to have ADSB. Because of this, a separate ELT would be a good idea and required.

Great idea. That way I would no longer need to go all the way around the class B anytime I wanted to go somewhere. All I would have to do is shut down the ADS-B and no one would ever know I was there or have a way to track me.
