I'm a prospective CFI and I happen to work in a federal prison. Recently, one of the inmates that I interact with regularly told me that when he gets out, he wants to finish his PPL, then go IRA and probably even Commercial. I told him that on the MedExpress form there is a question (18w) that asks about all felony and misdemeanor convictions.
His convictions are sex-related, not drug-related so that aspect is clear. (Obviously, I don't know his full medical/criminal history.)
My question is not so much to help him, but as a prospective CFI, if this comes up with one of my future students, how do non-drug felonies/misdemeanors affect your ability to get a Medical Cert? I know that the 61.153 (c) has a clause about "good moral character" for ATP, but I'm specifically just looking at the medical for now. His offenses are already over a decade old (he's been in prison longer than that) and, according to him, he has the finances to just go full ahead with his training.
