Today I flew a plane with dual Dynon certified HDX displays and a GTN750 and two analog GI-10x CDIs, one with lateral and vertical guidance, the other lateral only. Relatively pleased with the Dynon, but there was a weird behavior that I want to see if anyone can help shed some light on.

The flight plan loaded to the GTN was 5C1 - KERV and resulted in a magenta line on the Dynon CDI. I’m not sure if that was before or after Direct To KERV was selected after getting out of the terminal environment.

About 12 miles from KERV, I loaded and activated the KERV VOR-A. The magenta line on the Dynon HDX remained set to KERV, however the analog CDI with lateral and vertical guidance started providing active guidance to CSI, which is the IAF for the approach. Guidance for the remainder of the approach was on the GI-10x.

Fast forward to missed. Set up for the RNAV12 (LPV) into KERV on the GTN. Lateral and vertical guidance again presented on the GI-10x while the Dynon CDI still appeared to show the original magenta guidance of Direct To KERV. At no point was there any vertical guidance provided on the HDX.

Went missed, the used the GTN for Direct To 5C1. The HDX CDI appeared to now update the magenta line to reflect guidance to 5C1. Again, load & activate the 5C1 RNAV17 (LP) in the GTN and approach guidance went to the GI-10x CDI.

Is this behavior what should he occurring in a properly configured HDX+GTN configuration?

Other than ‘something isn’t configured correctly’, any ideas where to start?

- Thanks

I dunno but I’m willing to bet midlife gets this tested on multiple avionics, solves it and puts out a YouTube video before I’m done typing this response!

Do you have any screenshots? Any chance the Dynon HSI was set to Skyview as the source?

I don’t and it’s possible that is the case. No screen shot but I’ll be flying this plane again in about two weeks.

Is the setting changeable by the user?

Yes. Tap the SRC button on the AP Panel or the HSI Sourcr box on the HDX screen and it will cycle through the available options.

Thanks. No autopilot installed, but I’ll try this on the next flight. Looks like I’ll be flying this setup occasionally for the rest of the year so seeing if we can get it to work correctly will be worth it.

If only Dynon had an app :D

Unless I saw it in action, my guess would have to be the same as @Jesse Saint's.

It's not an autopilot thing. It's a PFD setup thing.

Menu > PFD Tools > HSI SRC

Shortcut is tappig the source box on the lower right of the PFD display:

@Jessie Saint

Flew it today. This is with a flight plan loaded in the GTN750. The GI-10x does display correct guidance data.

Not too terribly bad, but any ideas why the Dynon cam see the HTN, but gets zero data of any type from it?

I suspect there may be a configuration setting that’s incorrect in one of the boxes.

It sounds like a configuration issue. Can you post pics of your Dynon and GTN ARINC settings? What happens if you change the CDI to VLOC on the GTN?

GTN Configs below. I didn’t have a USB to stick into the HDX which I think is required to get to the HDX configs.

Thanks Mark and Jesse for your help, after flying it again this past week, I shared with the owner he needs to go back to his installer and have several issues resolved.
