I don't care about the story.
CNN's new format is terrible. I can't handle it.

Yeah, they used to be the first place I went for news. They are now the last.

Satellite looks really cool though. Also looks complicated, spinning microwave reflector and a counterrotating satellite. Wonder how long it'll work before the hamster stops running on the treadmill.

Among the major outlets, I still consider CNN the least biased although they do swing slightly left of center in reporting. But I absolutely HATE the way they latch on to one story and run it into the ground. All sorts of other important events going on in the world and they fixate on one.

It's absolutely horrible, and one of the best examples I can find of the dangers of responsive design -- especially when it's poorly-done. It basically looks like **** no matter which device you view it on.

Our local news radio station (WTOP) recently re-worked it's website. It, likewise, is an awful presentation and looks amateurish when compared to other news outlets (like NYT, WaPo, and WSJ).

It'll be interesting to see what the results of the last decades change in weather patterns has had on drought conditions.

I'm not too worried about large scale government monitoring of how often I water my back yard. This thing looks pretty cool. I'm not sure how useful the data is. It's not like we can move the rain if the soil is dry. Hopefully it can also be used to gather tactical data on our enemies.

But now their web design matches their "reporting". Both awful. I'm sure you've noticed most of WTOP's reporting is automated aggregation of AP stories with no actual WTOP personnel involved. The stories they do report are hardly worth the electrons they rode in on.

The data is about the ability for land to grow food and make projections on famine and drought.

Is any of the other media in town any better? Especially during sweeps?

Even the WaPo uses outside sources as "reporters" for many of their stories, including AP and other reporters that are not subject to the same scrutiny as employed reporters.

(Side note: I had the misfortune over the holidays of seeing a copy of what is claimed to be a newspaper in Cincinnati - the Cincinnati Enquirer. There is some coverage from McNews - er, USAToday - but it's essentially devoid of any practical or local news content. If you want to see truly "awful reporting", I'd suggest starting there.)

Not a particular defender of WTOP, but noting that such is the life of cost-cutting in the news reporting business.

From the Wikipedia page:
SMAP will provide measurements of the land surface soil moisture and freeze-thaw state with near-global revisit coverage in 2–3 days. SMAP surface measurements will be coupled with hydrologic models to infer soil moisture conditions in the root zone. These measurements will enable science applications users to:

Understand processes that link the terrestrial water, energy, and carbon cycles.
Estimate global water and energy fluxes at the land surface.
Quantify net carbon flux in boreal landscapes.
Enhance weather and climate forecast skill.
Develop improved flood prediction and drought monitoring capability.

SMAP observations will be acquired for a period of at least three years after launch. A comprehensive validation, science, and applications program will be implemented, and all data will be made available publicly through the NASA archive centers.
Emphasis mine on the last point. More transparency is a good thing.

I think if I were a farmer I would consider this a very positive development. Should also help meteorologists and climate scientists. I don't see a negative here (except for the CNN webpage format, which I agree is atrocious - almost as bad as CBS's 60 Minutes site, which now is impossible to access unless you are a paid subscriber).

As a farm kid, the data will be fantastic for planning and such.

Watching trends over time is going to be interesting.

So they say. Do we know that to be a fact? :dunno::dunno:

Actually it's part of the Chemtrail mind control program. The Chemtrail program has finally saturated everyone on the planet, and when this satellite gets activated everybody will be under direct satellite control. Not only that, it will also microwave all the dead to life and the zombies will all rise from their graves looking for brains to eat. Fortunately they they will fall quickly due to malnutrition.

They have a new format? Man it's nice not to pay to bring that crap into my home. I love finding out I missed some "format change" of something as utterly useless as CNN. Yay.

Sounds like a good plan.

I was referring to the website. I don't have the TV version
