Discretionary income and time to enjoy it trumps income or net worth. I get the feeling that you can't properly own/operate/maintain an airplane on much less than 10k/year; true or false?

False, it depends on the equipment. That said, for the most of GA, if you get enough use out of the plane to justify ownership, and include fuel costs, that's a fair starting figure. What broke ass people tend to forget is that Pt. 103 (though technically not airplanes) and their heavier 2 place counterparts exist on significantly lower budgets. A bachelor on a $30k income can afford to have fun with an ultralight.
