Do they have to be buried in the city to count, or can out-of-towners vote too?

Youse guys gotta icks nay on the iegs May until Prince Ritchie is gon.

He will take action so that his (Maggie's) will cannot be defied. The tower will be toast. He'll sink the island if he has to.

If it is restored I will stop and spend money in Chicago whenever I can. Right now I avoid Chicago at all costs.

Yep. If I have to connect through ORD I bring my own sandwiches to avoid the food vendors. Saves a ton of money too.

Off-topic, but I wish ORD had some decent restaurants. MDW has Potbelly, and there's plenty of decent places at other airports like IAD and SFO. Why can't ORD be like that???

So if he re-opens it on the first day as Mayor, will it be the first grass feild with a tower???

Same here. I haven't been to or through Chicago since Miegs was
destroyed.

Are sure I can't drive around the Lake, spend a night then register and pick up an absentee ballot?

Since money often seems to be a major factor in elections, maybe we can get a national PAC together to collect contributions to Hendon's campaign. I'd definitely give him some money.

Sorry it took me awhile to get back to this, but some comments reminded me of one of my favorite quotes by a former Illinois politician:
Few folks would brag about this, but here it is.

Best,

Dave

we note the comment made recently by former
Illinois Governor Jim Edgar, who left that office in 1998 and was
the last Illinois Governor not to face criminal charges for bribery
or corruption:
“Our place, in terms of being considered one of or the most
corrupt state in terms of politics, is pretty secure. It is
almost like we kind of relegated New Jersey to second place,
and Louisiana’s kind of like on injured reserve or something.”

I heard Rickey Hendon on the radio. When he talks about his platform as mayoral candidate, he says he'll reopen Meigs right off the bat.

Other than
Jesse Jackson, Jr. gonna run? His wife Sandi Jackson might run. Might as well run Tito and Marlon, too.
he comes off as an idiot, which, as we've seen lately, doesn't mean he can't get elected.

It is gonna be Rahm and Luis Gutierrez fighting for the nod. I know both men personally and know that either will be good for Chicago. Will they bring back Miegs? I doubt it. I think Meigs is gone for good an nothing will bring it back. Not even this Hendon guy.

Surely rebuilding and paving the runways will take about 10 years and millions of US Gov't funds to keep all those road workers employed.

Now that's bringing Jobs back into the City, anyone can run on that:goofy:

You know them personally? Tell them what Ray said.

Meigs 2.0

Not sure what else he would do, but y'all might want to get your dead relatives to vote for St. Sen Hendon for Chicago Mayor!

Like most politicians, I'd wager he'll back out of the promise. Even if he signs a pledge, crosses his heart, and swears an oath on the bible he can just give some excuse for backtracking.

Personally, I think pilots in the area would be better off trying to get council pressure on as soon as the current guy is gone. Probably be a lot easier to get pressure on bunch of smaller fish than the big sturgeon. Maybe get some GA "friends" to lend a voice (and some flash) to the resurrection effort. Heck, Harrison Ford acts like GA's best friend so he may be willing to do a commercial pro-bono, or at least at a severely discounted rate. (I don't mean to impugn Mr. Ford here, but I have no personal experience with the man to attest to his views, though he supports GA to congress-critters)

Creating a PAC isn't a bad idea, but create one specifically for getting the airport back, not to support a particular candidate. That way you're not on the wrong side of the coin if Candidate X loses.

I'm also unfamiliar with Meigs operating costs vs revenue. Was it a profitable airport? The case would be even better if it were.

Not a chance. The numbers are kept by tehg city where even before he bulldozed the runway at midnight, the Chicago Department of Aviation web site didn't list Meigs as an airport.

Chicago lumped the fees from O'Hare, Midway, and Meigs into one fund and claimed that the other two airports were paying the "load." Most galling is they used the airport fund to pay da bill for da guys wit nodes like dis to tear up da Meigs.

What Friends of Meigs wanted to do was find out the economic benefit of having a nearby airport. Being a non-profit they didn't have the funds for a study. The benefit was easily over $3 million a year. Consider entertainment and hospitality revenue, much less other business gains.

Don't forget the other $$$ adjustment to Meigs. The land was owned by the Park District and the airport had to pay them rent. I can tell you that the rent was always high enough so that the airport never was profitable. And lets be honest. It is really hard to make a vibrant airport profitable. That would be one with lots of traffic. Meigs was not vibrant, nor welcoming.
