I'm working with the backcountry group in Colorado to identify the private airstrips. Many are listed on charts, e.g. CO02 or 74CO. I have that list, but what I'm looking for now are the backcountry strips that aren't registered with the FAA.

Any suggestions where to start hunting?

Maybe you could ask on this forum?

That's the group I'm working with. The FAA has more than 450 airports listed in Colorado, but there are quite a few that have never been registered with the FAA or have been removed from the lists. You can see some of these as you fly Denver to Farmington. Some are dirt strips if you know what to look for, others are privately owned on private land or on BLM land. We're trying to create a better inventory of these.

Maybe they do not want to be found? Like a secret club or something?

Saw one of those in the desert southwest. Large ~5000ft runway in what
looked to be good condition. Nothing at all on the sectional. I asked ARTCC who said it was a private strip owned by the scientologists or something similar. I can understand the desire for privacy, but it would be nice to have runways like that charted and in databases for emergency use.

Yeah, but maybe they're like Hotel California. You can check in, but you can never check out!:dunno: Of course with Scientologists, it's probably controlled by aliens. :yikes:

Many private airport owners do not want to be registered, they don't want to be on the charts, they simply want to use the runway for them selves, and to be left alone.

I want to be left alone... but I had my private airport, 2WY3, charted so it will show up on the database if some pilot is in trouble and hits "nearest" on his GPS.... I would rather shake his hand then meet his next of kin after the search and recovery..

That's what I want! If it goes on the charts then that's one more government agency I have to deal with.

After it's in, if anyone needs to use it in an emergency they are welcome, if they can get into a short strip.
