My friend, Beverly, just called me from New York City. She said she was standing in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral at about 1:30 local time when a priest came out and announced the death of the Pope. Reuters and CNN are saying the Vatican denies that. Oh, well.

I'm sitting in the middle of a newsroom trying to figure out what to run tomorrow. A pope dying is a huge story, whole sections of the paper will be dedicated to coverage. The special section had been ready for three years. Everybody's worst nightmare is an officially announcement after midnight, the traditional East-Coast deadline point of no return.

When CNN made the call the "plan" went into effect. OOOPS.

Fox announced it based on their co-owned network SkyItaly. Everybody else picked it up. They were wrong. A Murdock outlet get it wrong?
