A buddy texted me a couple minutes ago. He’s waiting for his flight in Syracuse and watched a Predator take off.

Would that probably have been and ANG flight or Border Patrol? Other?

Yep, I used to fly in there often, it would seem odd sharing the same airspace as a UAV, but it was no different than with a manned aircraft. They used to have the CAP escort them to and from the MOA, but they stopped that last year.

i see one at times at my airport in the pattern.. it freaks me out every time knowing there is no azz inside it

There is an “other” in general, not specific to this sighting. Several private(non mil or govt operated) reapers/predators/grey eagles doing things in various places, mostly abroad but tested here.

It’s a thing.

They don’t seem to crash, and stay out of the way.

Yep, National Guard drone ops are based at KSYR. I've seen them taking off on RWY 33 when I've been taxiing out to RWY 28. They are bigger than you think!

I don’t think there’s much of a danger with mixed manned / unmanned ops. I’ve seen them as far back as 2004 in Iraq and not being escorted. Occasionally they’ll wreck on take off or landing but no worse than their manned counterparts.

Their airspace restrictions are the biggest PITA. Don’t know how many times I’ve held for takeoff or had to remain clear of a ROZ because of them. Always wanted to shoot one down with my mighty M-9 pistola. :D

Yeah...the big gov drones have a worse history than the RC airplanes the FAA gets all hot and bothered about.
