My wife's Honda oddessy has been leaking for a while and we keep filling it up. It's to the point a whole reservoir is used in about 200 miles.

Local shops quoted me $600 to replace. Import place, not the dealer. Most auto parts stores are showing the pump for about $200 and DIY is saying 3 hour job for a weekend warrior.

Anyone have an idea if this is doable with a small tool box or should I just take it in? $600 seems rather ridiculous for $200 part and 3 hours book rate.

They are doable. Power wash the holy crap out of the entire area so you can see what you are doing. Remove a bunch of stuff to get at it. Someone on YouTube has made a video, they are usually pretty good.

By cleaning it you may find all it needs is an oring, or something simple.

If you try to do this and you can with a few tools , be sure the new pump comes with a pulley already installed. Many rebuilt or new pumps do not come with pulleys and you have to take the pulley off the old one and install it on the new one. Generally this takes a special tool. The parts store may be willing to do this for you but be sure in advance. Many time when the pump is leaking it is just a bad oring on the line where it attaches to the pump. As suggested by another poster, clean it and check it before replacing it. It is entirely possible it is a ten cent oring and 15 minutes to replace it.

That special tool is less than $20. Some stores will rent or loan them.

Make sure it's really the pump. Pressure lines leak all the time.

Only issue you will have is pulling the pulley off the pump...sounds like you don't have the tools.

You can rent them as others have stated.

(IF it's leaking at the pump as you described) there are other areas to loose ps fluid in the system. Hopefully was diagnosed correctly.

It's pretty simple replacement, only special tool for the pulley is a 17mm socket. It's a bolt on pulley not press on. The tensioner is pretty hard to loosen. Other than that it's cake.

600??? P/S pump replacement on those is a simple job. Honda had a recall on those, it paid .3 to replace the pump.

It's a 2006. We bought it used in 2010, so I don't know what has been done to it. I'll call the dealer and see what they say.

I have an 04 acura MDX. They likely share the PS pump. Mine was making a lot of noise and had a slow leak, thought I was going to have to replace it.

Nah, problem was a .20 cent O-ring and took 10 minutes to fix. now 230,000 miles and counting

Check this TSB, make sure you don't have this problem.

If you look at the TSB, it was .3 to replace one o-ring.

Pump replacement isn't too difficult but I would guess 1.5hrs

Define 'small tool box' first. I'm not familiar with the placement of everything on that model, but there may be a good few things to remove to get to the pump, but that's just a matter of time really. As far as tools go, have the flare nut wrenches you need.

On a 06 oddessy? the P/S pump on the 3.5 honda motors is simple to do. I used to do these recalls when I was a honda dealer tech. It paid .3 I could do them in about 10-15 minutes.

If I remember correctly

Remove belt from P/S pulley
remove 10 mm bolt holding p/s pressure line
release clamp holding return line
remove 2 10mm bolts that attach the pump
remove 17mm ( I think 17 if I remember correctly) to remove pulley from old pump

Reverse to install and to bleed system just fill it and turn side to side a few times, I like to fill it and crank it and shut it right off then add a little more then let it run.

Check the used part suppliers. I just looked up that up on my system and see several with low milage recorded for $75 and less.

My "doppelganger", Denton Auto Parts in St. Mary's Kansas has 2 listed at $30 plus shipping, 6-month warranty. I betcha you could get a 2-year warranty added on for about $30 more dollars. 800-641-2886. I usually speak with James when I need something from them.
