Please take this in the gentle manner it's offered and take pity on those of us without high-speed lines. Please consider bandwidth and screen size when posting images.

I love photos of airplanes and parts of airplanes and people with airplanes but....

Someone recently posted photos of equipment that I'm considering buying and the images on the manufacturer's site are nto very good. So his photos provided an excellent sample of the equipment in real life, during installation, etc.

However, the photo sizes were 74 x 42 inches at 72 dpi, or 45.5 MB to download.

Please understand that I don't have a OC3 line, not even a T1 line, just a low speed DSL line. My monitor is only 24 inches across.

I downloaded one of the photos and rescaled it to 18 x 10 inches and saved it. Size? 152 KB. That's a ratio of 300 to 1 reduction!

thanks

what kind of speed are you getting?

Need to check on the tablet, but on the computer:
ping: 52 ms
download: 1.3 Mbps
upload: 0.72 Mbps

That's Bits, not word, bytes, nibbles, etc.

Other boards will resize a photo coming in. This one doesn't for some reason.

Its really simple to add to VBULLETIN.

Image resize - is done by a small edit to the raw vB code to use JavaScript,
it's line 1993 in the original file includes/class_bbcode.php

The original line is this:

return '<img src="' . $link . '" border="0" alt="" />';

my tweaked line looks like this:

return '<img src="' . $link . '" onload="
if(largerThan(this.width,1024))
{this.width=1024;this.alt=\'Click here to see a large version\';
this.style.border=\'3px double black\'; }
else { this.style.border=\'1px solid black\'; }"
onmouseover="if(this.alt) this.style.cursor=\'pointer\';"
onclick="if(this.alt) window.open(\'' . $link . '\');" />';

note my version uses a tiny 'helper' function declared in the style
templates:

<script type="text/javascript">
function largerThan(a,b)
{
return a>b;
}
</script>

=====

Hope that is clear, it's simple due to the nice way vB is structured for
such operations, but sadly was a hack (raw code edit) because the vB
hook system didn't allow for this type of change.

I sent this to Jason back in 2012. Either it didnt work for them or they decided to keep the code clean and virgin without any VB hacks, which i can understand too.

1.3 is, well, not good but yeah, people upload the hugest-ass pics, it's crazy. I made the mistake of trying to help someone out one time, I guess if people don't know, they just don't know. If that sht isn't loaded within like 3 seconds, I'm on to the next post.

I vote you the official POA tweaker. :D

Please no. :D

The MC doesn't really need my help, plus i do that **** for a living. I come here to get away from IT. But, oversized images is a peeve of mine. Maybe one day this vb install will be able to resize a 3000px wide photo to something that will fit one most folks screens. However, I'm grateful POA is here even without this vb edit.

What are you using, paper cups and some string?

Wet string in these parts lately. My speed varies from 100 down to 0 depending on the weather. It's the downside of living in a desert, the locals don't know how to build a system that is rain tolerant.

Doesn't do anything for his bandwidth issues. I use ImageMagick on the server to do an actual resize.

That is true. But i dislike mile wide photo posts just as much as large sized download ones.

I try to post with my smugmug account.
