Possible scam?

I would think that he really needs to put like $3 on a money pak and send them the code -

that would be hilarious - or perhaps 75 cents instead of 7500.00 -

I have contacted a private person looking to sell a truck. I would be the buyer. I found the truck advertised on local Craigslist. Does this looks like a scam? Can Ebay escrow be used for non-Ebay listings? Below is e-mail I received from him.

"The transaction will be fully under eBay’s surveillance, giving us both security and insurance since they offer the highest rate of safety and reliability during online transactions.
They act as a neutral third party. Look how this works: I will contact eBay and give all the info about this deal.
They will email us the forms which are needed for our deal(invoice, payment instructions, buyer’s and seller’s protection policy).
You will send the money to eBay and they will notify me to ship the vehicle (on my expense) to your location.
After you will inspect the vehicle and decide to keep it, eBay will forward the funds to me once you have approved them to do so.
They will hold and insure your money until you will receive and test the vehicle. I need your name , shipping address and cell #
so I can reserve the vehicle for you and register the transaction with
eBay and they will contact you with all the instructions step by step on how to complete the transaction."

SCAM.

Keys to this are a vehicle being sold for way below value. There is always an excuse for why the vehicle cannot be seen or test driven before delivery. There is no such thing as Ebay escrow. Google searches will reveal quite a bit on this scheme.

The single most effective way to avoid phishing scams is to never, not ever, click on a link that someone sends you...ever.

So, for example, look at this link:

http://www.microsoft.com So, it's a link to Microsoft, right? Go ahead and click it (I promise, it's not dangerous!)...

Mouse-over is a great time saver with links like that.

The very first email: the FROM: Ebay - goes to:

A Network Solutions Who Is search shows that the domain name "e-motors-payment.com" is registered to this person:

Send the "escrow service" a "cashier's check," but "accidentally" make it out for double the amount, and ask them to refund the excess to you, because you didn't discover the "error" until you had left on a cruise ship that is now in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

I helped bag a scammer once in my camera store, with help from several parties. I had been contacted by someone representing a school department in Philadelphia. "They" had accepted my bid on a lot of Nikon equipment. Much earlier during telephone contact I had suspected a scam and re availability and shipping data I "need to "get you on the line with my warehouse and shipping manager," which I did. However, that person was a detective(actually) with the local police department(not an employee of mine). The merchandise would be shipped to an address in Philadelphia. So far - so good. Well, the Chief of Police in Portland, ME at that time was a fellow by the name of Mike Chitwood, known in these parts as "Media Mike," never afraid to be heard or seen in the media. Chief Chitwood had come to Maine from Philadelphia where he had been a Detective, the one who discovered - lead to charges - of some case that involved a corpse which had been found but which case had been in the "actives" for years. So I contacted Media Mike and he became involved because he knew plenty about Philadelphia.

We followed along with the "plan" which was shipment to be made only after we received the school department's check. It arrived and we prepared the merchandise to be shipped. Well, the "shipped" was a heavy box, if you get my drift. Chief Chitwood had already, through his contacts in Philadelphia, that the destination address was an empty suite on the fourth floor of a large office building(which was mostly empty).

"Time is running short on our beginning school session, so please ship via FedEx." And we did. FedEx was with knowledge of the program and, as usual, could disclose the approximate time of delivery. The outside of the large shipping container was hand-coded with an identifier. Media Mike's compatriot in Philadelphia, plain clothes, staked out the delivery location as per the time frame. When FedEx arrived, it seemed that the building's elevator was down for service. There was an employee stationed at street level to receive any and all shipments.

FedEx arrived; undercover could see the "marker" on the box. The driver knew nothing of the mission to unfold. But when the "employee" signed(required) for the shipment - - - - -BUSTED! The real killer is that, the scammer who started the whole deal was a prisoner, captive in the Pennsylvania penal system. The "check" turned out to be fraudulent, though it was never deposited and I wanted to keep it. "Sorry; it needs to be held as evidence." Slime can be found in unique places.

HR

I recently saw reference to a Police Chief Mike Chitwood, somewhere in Florida. I'd bet he's the son of our former "Media Mike."
