Okay I'm going to share a truth.

I hate eating with other people. I mean I do it, and I like eating with other people more than I like not eating, but it's usually an awkward, protracted process. Reason why?

I'm focused. On one task. Eating. I'm eating because I'm hungry, not because I have an overwhelming desire to spend my lunch time or dinner time with you, or because I'm interested in your products or services. My primary mission at the moment isn't to tell you how nice your hair looks, ask about your weekend, inquire about good deals on automobiles, discuss job opportunities, gossip about co-workers, comment on the weather... None of those things. I want to f***ing eat.

My eating pace is judged to be, by those who like to judge other people's eating habits, is consider rapid. In a restaurant situation, I'm always the last person that should be served. I don't totally scarf my food down like there's no tomorrow, but I don't wait five minutes between bites, or take really small bites either. People have told me "slow down, you'll enjoy your food better." No, I don't. If I eat too slowly, I don't even feel like I'm eating. The whole reason I'm eating in the first place is so I can feel like I'm eating. I don't if I eat too slow. Five to ten minutes of sheer enjoyment is better than an hour of no enjoyment. By far.

I mean don't get me wrong, if I'm having lunch with you, I'll eat, and I'll talk, and I'll pretend to listen, attempt to respond in a timely fashion and play along with small talk but to me it's like balancing your checkbook while you're in the middle of fending off a dangerous zoo animal. You might see me seek a compromise. Scarf down a salad. Take a break from eating, conversate, communicate. Attack the burger. Take a break from eating, conversate, communicate. Attack the onion rings. Then you have my full undivided attention.

What are YOUR eating habits?

I don't have eating habits but I have eating pet peeves. The people that take abnormally long to eat P*** me off. I find it rude. Eat at least at pace with everyone else if not faster. In a large group one or two people that take the entire hour... ugh.

Unfortunately almost anyone in the car business eats fast.:nono: It's a terrible habit, but we seldom leave for lunch and it seems as soon as you sit down with your Chick-fil-a sandwich someone needs you in the showroom. :dunno: My M-I-L eats as slow as anyone alive and somehow when we go out to eat they always bring her food LAST. I am usually ready for the check before she has eaten half of her food. :mad2:

I eat steadily. Not too fast and not too slow. I'm like Sac, I really just want to eat. We'll talk after I eat.

Reminds me of Homer when he guides a sinking raft to a Krusty Burger on an offshore oil rig. As he's scarfing down Krusty Burgers, Bart tries to express his pride in his father, to which Homer responds, "Can't talk now. Eating."

You should try going to France...although it's not the eating that takes abnormally long--it's the whole "dining experience." I remember one lunch where we arrived at about noon and left at around 3:00 PM. I ate the best fish of my life, but it only took three hours :). But boy oh boy was that fish delicious.

You would HATE my M-I-L she is old school, small bites and chew it 800 times and talks between bites, takes days for her to finish a meal:mad2:. The only good news is she usually boxes half of it up to take home. :D

Yeah that's exactly what my French teacher said.

I have never been able to slow down my eating and I have received much criticism over it.

At restaurants where you should be "eating on pace with everyone else" I normally get a steak. A big steak. Now I dont know about you but when that plate hits the table and the waiters hands have evacuated the area its fair game. I like my steak hot.

I would believe my fast eating habits started when I was a child. I always wanted to go out side and play with the other kids in my neighborhood and eating was taking time away from play time. So, I would eat all my food really quick then go back out side and play.

Now I hate that I eat fast, I'm always first done eating in a group and I have to just sit around watching every one eat till they're finished. Kinda sucks. Another thing is I want to eat my food while its still warm, I'll enjoy it better that way.

Good Lord. This is definitely an American question. :wink2:

I've been to lunches (on vacation, true) where all of a sudden you look down at your watch and realize, hey, we should get a move on, it's only a few hours until dinner.

Do you not drink wine while you are out dining with your friends?

No ma'am.... I can't afford to drink wine.....:nonod:..

Unless they have a special going on for Ripple, MD20/20 or Boones Farm.;)

My eating habits completely depends on whether or not I have the whole day to waste. If I do then it will take an hours or so, if I got stuff to do then it will be gone in under five minutes.

Do you not drink wine while you are out dining with your friends?

It's usuallly frowned upon at lunch time with coworkers but yes - Sac drinks copious amounts of wine when dining out with friends.

Usually a good Napa Valley Zinfandel, or perhaps a Fume Blanc (Grgch Hills makes a hella chuggable Fume) or Carlos Rossi, depending on the mood and crowd.

Had Grgch in Croatia. Same family. Very good. Very.

Yeah I got turned on to them the last time I went wine tasting in the Valley. Dude like totally skooled me on Sauvignon Blancs.

But back the subject, here's the thing - I don't think eating habits are mutually incompatible with the "dining experience." I might spend hours at dinner, eating and drinking wine with friends, or business associates or whomever. It's just that the actual eating part of it will be fairly short and focused, that's all.

Nope. I am a straight man.

Food is eaten quickly, wine drinking men are pointed at and laughed at.

Does your boyfriend approve of the fast eating or does he prefer to eat fast too? I ask because my wife eats very slowly except when she is super hungry, and she knows I don't like it when she scarfs down her food.

She also drinks wine when eating with friends. Maybe its a guy vs.girl thing.

Usually slow and steady, but not agonizingly so. But I also know know to eat on the run if need be.

Lol, I had to read that twice. What does Bubba think? Does Charity get jealous? Maybe a little too metro on the last couple of posts.

I would say I eat faster than most women and slower than most men, when you are talking about the same quantity of food, anyway. When I go out with other people it's mostly to socialize (unless it's with my flying buddies I work with) so the company is more important than the food. Actually, I'm not that much of a connoisseur of food. When I'm alone I eat when I'm hungry and I eat what is easily available.

I don't take forever, but I also don't inhale my food. Even if I'm starving. I've found that the faster I eat, the longer it takes me to feel full, so I will eat more and then I feel like a bloated whale. Not good.

I try to enjoy my food. What's the point of spending $$$ on a nice dinner when its done in 10 minutes?

I eat slowly. Not for any reason, it just takes me longer to finish a plate of food than most. If I am with a group and realize that everyone is finished and I am not, then I usually just stop eating and declare I cannot eat any more. That is, if I notice that everyone else has stopped.

I eat way too fast. Can't say why, I just do. Slower is better, gives your stomach time to realize it's full.

According to my wife I eat fast. According to everyone else, she is the slowest eater on the planet.

I eat at a normal pace to allow conversation as well as enjoy the meal. I have managed to break myself of the "eat everything in five minutes or else you'll die" mentality because I always felt terrible afterwards. I also eat continually throughout the day so I'm not famished when it comes lunch or dinner time. Eat slowly, enjoy the food and stop when you think you're getting full.

Whoa dude, here in California we are allowed to drink wine as a straight male, as long as we eat like a man. So, I think I have my bases covered. I believe that's also the case in other major metropolitan (no "metro" pun intended but I can see how you might make one) areas in the rest of the country such as New York and the Washington D.C. area. Not sure about Philly and Chicago.

Bubba drinks Magnum Malt Liquor, 40 ouncers mostly, but he's a connisour of wines as well. He likes both red and white Carlos Rossi. Charity gets a little put off when I drink wine because that's what she drinks, and since I paid for her cheap ass Arbor Mist Chartreus to the tune of fifteen bucks a glass at the gentleman's club, you're damn straight I'm drinking some of it too.

Ladies, help me here. Sac apparently has to defend himself from a charge of metro-ality.

Ok, yeah, I've heard that about San Francisco specifically. That the straight guys drink their wine from a fancy glass in the bath houses there, before getting their weekly mani/pedi.

That's me as well. It just depends. My wife is a wine consultant for a Napa Valley winery so we have some long ones, but I eat on the run as well. It isn't something that I uber analyze, I just go with whatever feels right.

It depends.

Who I'm with, where I am, whatever else is going on... and how many courses. an 8 course meal in a fine restaurant will go at a different pace than, say a couple of cheese Coneys and a 5-way at Skyline Chili. :vomit:

Go to Barcelona or Madrid sometime - folks show up for dinner around 10 PM, and may not end until it's almost Dawn.

Good company or folks I haven't seen for a while will entail a longer meal than finishing before an impending episode of Man VS Food on the Travel Channel. :yikes:

It's all situational.
