This is the way it should be done - all police officers should see this and follow suit, rather than shooting him dead at first opportunity.

Note - if this officer, who was legitimately being attacked, can restrain himself, than those that are being licked or played with could do the same if they had any ounce of character.

The animal control officer says the dog was returned because there was no injury??? Thats' only because the officer stayed cool and avoided being chomped on. If it was a small child walking down the street, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a fatality. According to the reporter, the police were called because of the dog going after others walking by. That is one lucky Rott, the cop would have been fully justified in shooting that dog after being charged like that. It wasn't just barking at him, it charged him full-steam.

Glad to see that the dog was not punished for the mistakes of the handlers...not properly trained, and not properly handled.
I think the only reason the dog didn't get shot initially was because it got too close to him too fast for him to draw and make an effective shot. He kicked the dog away to open a gap, and drew immediately. If it weren't for the taser, the next move probably would have been to put a slug in it. I couldn't blame him for that- it was in attack mode, and trying to stop even a baby rott in attack mode, you will get bit pretty bad before you subdue it.
The voice-over says it was chained in the yard (maybe it was earlier), but you can clearly see it's on a regular leash, which has been released. There's another, larger dog, that's not on a leash, but the kids are leashing it as the cops approach. These kids obviously have no idea what they're doing. Sooner or later, their ignorance will lead to an injury, and another potentially wonderful canine companion will be put to death. the family will just get another dog, and mis-handle it the same way. :rolleyes2:

Dog should be put down and owner should spend a month in jail.

The owner, perhaps, but there's still hope for the dog. It's young. Proper training has a good chance of being effective.

Rotts have a bad rep. A lot of people think they're vicious, but they're not. They're not even especially competent hunters. But they're a extremely loyal and protective breed. That instinct has to be tamed and channeled, and a good trainer can do it.

The owner should be put in jail for being an idiot and training the dog to attack people. Just because its a rottweiler, doesn't mean it automatically wants to kill people. It has to be trained to do so. The dog doesn't know any better.

Rotweilers are really great dogs, but once ruined like that they require intensive, specialized and long duration training that they are unlikely to receive. Best thing the officer could have done was put a slug in it ending it's misery and its potential to create harm.

A pity the dog has to suffer because of the mistakes of its masters, but such is the way of the world. Happens to humans all the time.
