Hi all,

My nine-year-old son really likes listening to podcasts, and of course I'm trying to keep him interested in aviation even though we haven't been flying together as much recently. So, for bedtime podcasts I've been playing some aviation stuff.

Greg Brown's Flying Carpet podcast is exactly what I want, but we've been through the entire library twice now and we need some new stuff! I really like Betty in the Sky With a Suitcase, but unfortunately it seems like every episode seems to have some stuff that is really not age-appropriate, so I don't think we're going to be able to continue with that one. :(

So, I'm looking for aviation podcasts that are about the fun, romance, and stories about flying adventures and not necessarily the technical aspects of flying. Any recommendations? Thanks!

I like "Pilot Debrief with Hoover", but that might not be best for a young person with aspirations of flying. Also, it is a Youtube video series. I don't know if that makes it a podcast or not.

I Learned About Flying from That (ILAFFT) has been a great podcast, put out by Flying Magazine and AVEMCO, that interviews real world pilots, from run of the mill GA guys, to a female fighter pilot who was trying to get home from an event still in a formal dress and heels and everything in between. It gives some great memories and great lessons.

The host, Rob Reider, is now doing a new podcast called the Reider Report that seems like it may feature similar content, but I haven’t gotten to listen to that yet.

Opposing Bases is two controllers/pilots from the Piedmont area who bring their own unique perspective to common issues in aviation. This one is likely more technical than what you are wanting.

AOPA’s Air Safety Institute has one called “There I Was” that has pilots telling about the predicaments they found themselves in, how they got there, and how they lived to tell the tales.

Pilot’s Discretion (Sporty’s) may or may not be what you’re looking for as I haven’t listened to it, but their content is usually helpful.

As with anything, I encourage you to listen first so that you know what kind of content your child is consuming, but I would not have a problem with my kids listening to ILAFFT or There I Was…

Just Plane Radio is kinda fun.
Midwest flying podcast.
Stuck mic avcast

I've been listening to The Old Pilot's Plane Tales, which I think is a spinoff from Airline Pilot Guys podcast where Captain Nick tells some fun and interesting stories. It's much shorter format than Airline Pilot Guys podcast.

I got hooked on "There I Was" last month. I've listened to about 60 of the 90 or so episodes so far...

Yeah, there's a lot of accident review stuff out there, lots of "here's a thing I learned/learned from", but not as much stuff that's just the fun and glory and romance of flying.

Dang. Rob Reider has been around a long time. He hosted the Sporty's videos I watched for my Private nearly 25 years ago!

Yeah, I love OB because I'm a closet ATC nerd but I don't think he'd be particularly interested in that just yet.

Sick of the Pilotcast? :)
 I would actually LOVE to play it for him... Sadly, I don't even have a copy of the whole library any more, probably only a couple of individual episodes if that. :( If anyone does have copies of any old Pilotcast episodes, I would LOVE to have them!

Ooh, that was one of my favorite parts of APG! Has he done the ones that were part of APG too? I have only heard a few, but I really enjoy them.

Not sure. APG I’m going in reverse order. Plane Tales I’m going oldest to newest.
