It still has a ways to go in my opinion, although it is around 90% of the way there. Pretty much just needs more power. If they're able to get up to 200 HP a side, I think they'll get there.

Why do you need more power? It takes off in 1300 feet, gets ~190 knots in the mid-high teens, gets from MSL to FL180 at an average rate >1000 fpm, and has reasonable OEI performance and a single-engine service ceiling close to the flight levels - And all that is at max gross.

I mean, I know you're an engine guy and you like power, but it seems that the latest version has enough...

Because their website and the review I read said that's not the performance it gets? :dunno:

That's what I was thinking as well. None of the poll choices would satisfy my flying needs as well as the Baron I already own although each has some individual characteristics I would like and it would probably take something like a G58 to tempt me. In any case a list of piston twins simply isn't complete without at least one Baron on it.

Oh for crying out loud guys it's a free plane!!!!!! You just won a free twin engine aircraft!!!!!!!!! Come on!!!!!!!

The person on here who complains the most about his plane and how expensive it is... got his for free. And it's not a twin.

With the prices that twins have these days, you might as well get one for free. Well, I suppose you could say that I did (and it was a 310), but it was really my non-profit. Let's see, how much money have we put into that plane the past 3 years...

I'm a Mooney guy. I'll take the Commander please. I'd no doubt have to either sell it, or keep flying it and probably kill myself with it.

 Why would you kill yourself? Commanders are pussycats to fly. Not cheap, but not monsters.

Because I'm no where near a place in my life where I want to dedicate the time, or training it takes to be proficient at traditional, high performance twin flying. I would want to fly the plane, but not all the dual with instructor every six months or so.

Now that I think about it a little bit, I really don't think I would keep any of these twins. I really don't want the headache involved with flying and feeding them. I'd sell it, fix up my Mooney some more and put the rest in the bank.

Overall I think this is a smart move. I've said for a long time that twins aren't for everyone, and that if you don't spend the time to stay proficient, you're more dangerous in a twin than a single. I just went to SimCom for a few days towards that end. Takes time and money to do.

With that said, I think the DA42 might not be bad for a Mooney replacement. MPG won't be too far off with the two diesels vs the Lycoming, and it's probably not that bad on MX.
