Yep, we made Deadwood our base but were disappointed at the overwhelming presence of slot machines - every restaurant was hidden behind rows of them - even gas stations had them. You couldn't get away from them. It's a shame as it has detracted from a historical town. I think next time we would stay in Hill City.
First full day there we drove down to the Crazy Horse Memorial, then on down into Custer for the Wildlife Loop, then the Iron Mountain Rd to Mt. Rushmore, back down the Needles Hwy, and returned to Deadwood about 7:00pm.
Next day we did the drive to Devil's Tower in Wyoming, back to Sturgis (bought the T-Shirt) then back to Deadwood.
Third day we did the Boot Hill tour and Kevin Costner's Tatanka.
