I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion for last minute travel? I can go anywhere north of DC so long as Amtrak goes there. So far I have played tourist in NYC, Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Newark. Any other great places to go that may have some aviation tie? I'm doing NYC and the old Pan Am Heliport today. Any GA airports close to the north east corridor and accessible by public transit?

I'd rather fly but not gonna happen for a good five years so by rail it is! Plus Amtrak is free so...

From Washington, DC all the way to Boston. Preferably day trips.

If you're into Tall Ships then Amtrak into Mystic is a good ride, and then a short-ish cab ride into Mystic Seaport. Casinos (if you're into that), or catch a show at one of them if you don't gamble, again cab needed from the RR station. Boston is always fun. John's suggestion is a good one too.

Dayton, Ohio has the Wright Patterson museum. Go a little north to Urbana and they have a museum as well. Cincinnati is also where Sportys has a brick and mortar store.

The Amtrak will take you right to Old Orchard Beach here in Maine.

It's a pretty fun place ~

Does it have to be north? Take the Amtrak Carolinian or Cresent (or transfer to the Piedmont) and get off in Salisbury, you can take a cab (or even hoof it if you can do two miles) back to the Southern Railway yard at Spencer which holds the North Carolina Transportation Museum.

Not sure SW OH is considered the East Coast. :D

But the USAF Museum is a fantastic place. I am proud to say several of the airplanes there have my fingerprints on them including the F-117, F-111 and others.

Cheers

He just said he's not flying for 5 years so he's not flying to BDL! At least not to TACAir . . . :):yikes:
If he were the only person reading this, then yeah, adding the info about Tac Air wouldn't make any sense. There are a whole lot of other people reading these threads looking for ideas. I added that because of the rest of us.

Thanks for all of the ideas so far. I'll research them, hopefully most can be done in a day. I know a trip to NYC and back is a 6-7hr round trip. About the same in a slow 172 by the time you add up stuff.

Amtrak is free? Am I missing something

My dad works for Amtrak so I have this card that gives me free travel. They don't require me to book but for overnight trips and such I'd have to pay. A hop up the coast on the Northeast Regional only requires a flash of my pass and a nice nap in business or coach. To go to say California via amtrak, I'd get anywhere from a 40-80% discount which is still too much for me to pay.
