Plastics Repair

When you guys get done playing with your chemistry sets trying to melt plastic in acetone...

This from a guy who used to melt plastic in acetone, then used ABS plumbing cement and then discovered something that works better and easier.

How does that work filling small holes, cracks?

At Ace Hardware they sell Klean Strip brand that is just labeled "Painters Solvent". It says on the can that it replaces MEK and it does to a degree, not as strong but stronger than acetone.

For plastic repair I bought a small tube of this Bondic stuff just to try it out. It is instantly cured by exposing it to the UV light that is included. The stuff is extremely strong when cured but it doesn't actually "bond" to anything, it needs some sort of texture to grab onto so it's useful only in the right circumstances. For certain plastic repairs I think it would work. I used it to "stitch" a tear in a leather seat and it has held up through daily use now for several months.
