Pilot Mark Finkelstein lost power shortly after takeoff but was rescued quickly by lifeguards on-scene. No injuries were reported.

No cause yet stated, speculation starts shortly on POA,

No fire = no gas. This case is closed.
Not so fast. We haven’t had 12 pages of posts and several calls to wait for the NTSB report.

The airplane was a successful ditching.

The pilot said ....

"At some point, the engine started to lose power, so the RPM started to go down," he said. "At a certain point, the engine just stopped altogether, and the propeller just stopped, and at that point it was very clear that I was going to be making a landing in the water."

No prop windmilling? Hmm.

I do wonder if there was too much air in the gas tanks.

there was a guy based at my home field who ditched his mooney off the coast near myrtle beach. he did something with precious stones and said he had $10k worth of diamonds in the plane when it went down. the plane was never found. I looked it up after he told me the story and yup, he lost an engine and ditched in the water. also al mooney never wore swimmies and never had a swim buddy.

Glad the lifeguards got him out before it floundered.

The rescuers happened to be in the immediate area at the time of the crash due to having been called to assist in rescuing a swimmer who had made it to the beach when they arrived. The airplane ditched just after they had arrived in the area.

He flew it (his J230) from shelbyville, TN (SYI) to oak island (SYT), 425 NM straight line, Thursday, 7/31. Ditched 13 mins after takeoff Saturday 8/2.

Glad he’s ok.

Someone else flew it back from TN after months of work being performed. This was his first flight after receiving it back.

It has a nice Garmin GPS and gfc-500 autopilot in it. I should say it HAD….

Sorry, but if you have a nice airplane . . .

Why would you want Otto to fly it?

Thanks for the correction!
I should have worded it differently, obviously to reflect that *it* was flown from Shelbyville.

Do you know Mr Finkelstein?
