Plane lands in Hollywood Driveway

Did good! Don't need no stinkin' chute! ;):D

One of the two comments:

"another one that is told old to fly - so much for protecting the general public from old out dated planes that comes crashing to the ground .....daily"

I'm trying to figure out how he end up in the driveway? That's a pretty short driveway..

The story said he landed in the street, a wing clipped something (light pole?), and spun him around. Looks like he did a good job of parking it, though!

Perhaps Ace Ventura was the pilot...

I've always kept my post-maintenance flights within gliding distance of the airport, in case someone bolluxed something. I see now that I had a good idea.

Incredible... luck or skill, but either way incredible.

Good job, short field practice paid off.

My hat's off to to the pilot. That's very impressive for an airplane.

Trikes, on the other hand, can be set down pretty much anywhere. Slow speeds and big sails make it easy. I landed my friend's Solairus (ultralight) trike in about 125 feet a couple of weeks ago. Minimum landing distances for LSA trikes are more typically around 200 feet. Up here in the boonies, that means there's basically no place you couldn't easily land a trike if you had to. It's one of the things I like about them.

Indeed, at least with airplanes. Trikes can be set down pretty much anywhere. I measured one landing at 127 feet in an ultralight trike. LSA trikes are more typically around 200 feet.

The quotes from the pilot:

"I saw the road here and there was nobody on it — no traffic, no children around," said Randall, who had a bandage wrapped around his head and a little blood on his shirt. "That was my first priority, to make sure that I didn't hurt anybody's home or take anyone's life."

...

"I did what I could to get it down and walk away from it," he said. "Any landing that you walk away from is a good landing."

Good job on the landing, and good job on saying what he did for the press.

Probably wheeled it out of the way of traffic. They spoke of the prop scarring the asphalt, so that'd be my first guess.
