plane down near KPOU Pougkeepsie NY / all ok

Not much more than 5 miles, straight line distance from my house.
The people on the plane should give thanks to whatever deity they believe in. A year ago that hill was covered with big trees. The outcome would have been much worse.

So what exactly is the leading cause of engine failure during or shortly after takeoff? I don't think something like the Nall report breaks it down to that level. Anyone know?

Is it safe to say that most accidents happen during the landing and taking off phase of flying?

From what I remember yes. To take that even a step further most fatal accidents happen on takeoff, while accidents on landing have a much higher survival rate.

Glad they survived, looks like a good emergency landing. The pilot was probably prepared for an engine out situation on takeoff. I always have a plan for takeoff emergencies.

They've been doing a lot of flying, at least 12 hrs in past week...
