Plane/car "Transition"

OMG this is cool but sort of odd looking. I wonder what they cost. Thanks for the video.

There are a few Terra Fugly threads floating around.

No thanks. Probably the worst of both worlds.

That's less than a new 172

It is an impressive feat of engineering they made that thing comply with all the applicable car safety laws while still making it fly. I would buy one if I could afford to, but it wouldn't be the only airplane I own.

With so many airports being fenced in these days, I wonder if you would run into problems getting in and out of the airport. I also wonder how strong that folding wing is and how it securely locks into place. It is an interesting concept, but like was stated before, probably the worst of both worlds.

If you watch the video, you see that you can fly at 20 ish feet! 450 miles, hovering 20 feet above the ground. Great!

My Mooney transitions into a very comfortable car at the FBO car rental for much less than $279K.:D

If you went to OSH you would know. ;)

Historically, a car that flies is good at neither. I wish them well and hope they sell a bunch.

In several ways...still it might be handy at the many small town airports that don't have a courtesy car or rental available.

I was thinking I could take off on a lonely street near my home, fly to the airport, and hop in my real plane. :D

Agreed. Though I use my cell phone all the time as a camera, if I want to take photos, I use my DSLR. When you go for "all in one" in tech you often compromise a lot..... is it a car? Is it a plane? Make up your mind!!! The video I watched recently - filmed at OSH- highlighted a plane with folding wings that you could land at an airport, or a remote lake, with a trailer to your truck, that you could park in your garage. But it was a PLANE and not a car..... this idea seems better to me.

Haters gonna hate.

If amphibious cars never made it into the market what makes you think a plane/car will do it. After all you do not need a pilots licenses for the amphibious, cost less and looks like a car out of the water. You can avoid bridge tolls and traffic jam at NY and San Francisco.

I cracked up when they did their test flights and used a 172 for a "chase" plane.

Then there's always the TerraFuschia:

Given the stratospheric hangar costs in the major metro areas of both coasts, this thing could be a hit. Hangar costs are my biggest one-line item, and I live in bumphuck west egypt. Everyone I know lives within a 10 minute drive to an airport. Being able to store the thing in your garage could be a big decision maker with a lot of people.

Let's be realistic, no one wants one of those to drive the the airport and then start flying. Everyone would love to be in a traffic jam turn-off on a side street and take off, laughing at those poor saps below. Or be running 90 down the highway when they pass a cop, then just extend wings and bye, bye, po, po.

What happens when this thing gets in a fender bender? A/P or auto mechanic?

Also, it isn't attractive, the only way this thing is going to be popular is if Justin Bieber shows up to the Oscars in it.

At the Charlotte Antique boat show, we had a guy show up in an Ampicar 770 a few years back. It's not that fast, but still way cool to see it drive down the boat ram into the water.

Before or after it's been parked in a parking lot/drive way and punk kids come along and break the wings off and stomp on the carnard in front for the 4th time that week? Seriously, you can't own something nice without someone wanting to break it. That's without the tailgating hummer bumping into the back of it and the side swiping in parking lots. One touch by a 1500lb plastic car is going to be spendy.

It would however be fun to see 2 million of these things commute to work in the morning..in the Washington DC ADIZ/TFR nonsense.

Right idea, wrong civilization.
+1 for George Jetson.
- 83,563 for practicality.

I see the whole roadability thing as a way to get from the airport to your home nearby. It won't be replacing your car any time soon.

Lots of normal middle class people have outrageously breakable things. High end motorcycles, both the fast ones and the customs, have all sorts of delicate doo dahs that can be broken off through carelessness, for example. I laud these guys for their ingenuity and hope it all pays in the end. I really can see a market for these things.

I can think of plenty of small weekend trips I'd like to take, but the destination airport either has no convenience car and/or there is not a rental option close by.
