Plane at KWER has hydraulic problems, emergency landing?

Didn't even hear about it until hours later... I knew it couldn't have turned out badly because I probably would have heard it when it happened (I live less than 2 miles from the tower).

When this happened, I heard it, and I was half a mile farther away!

That was about a year after my dad retired...he was glad to not be involved

Wow, that incident sure mimics the similar accident with the same model aircraft and same carrier, in Japan...

Not being a smartass, but isn't that behavior of the MD11/DC10's kind of an achilles heel of some sort? Not very forgiving to less-than-satisfactory landings?

MD11 yes.

DC10 - not at all and that is part of the problem. They look similar but they are most definitely NOT the same airplane.

I thought the landing gear in a series 30 dc 10 was carried over to the md11's...I guess I was wrong...
Landing gear may be the same, but landing gear has nothing to do with it.

The issue with the MD-11 that makes it rather unforgiving on landing is the control system software and the size of the horizontal stabilizer. I know some FEDEX guys who have flown both. The -10 is easy to land. The -11 will eat your lunch in a heartbeat.
