Plagiarists shouldn't be hotlinkers

During a routine check for plagiarism, I uncovered a site whose operator was stupid enough to not only plagiarize one of my sites, but to hotlink to my images, as well.

Luckily, we have a cure for that:

And yet another one!

Just so I don't come off as a jerk, I enter the .htaccess redirects for each infringing domain individually. Most hotlinking is done innocently, just like people here do when we plant an image in a post simply to illustrate something. There's no intent to infringe.

A lot of people use my images the same way, and I really don't have any problem with it. I don't want a horse's posterior popping up every time someone uses one of my pictures to illustrate a point. That's just silly and mean.

But when people outright plagiarize my sites, and then have the gall (or the stupidity) to hotlink my images, as well, I give them their own special lines in .htaccess.

My favorites are the ones that show up in the middle of Ebay listings. You get some real hoots when the owner substitutes things. My favorite was some expensive fountain pen some guy was selling and the picture was substituted for an old tooth-chewed wooden pencil.

The second one really annoyed me because he actually claimed that his plagiarism was "exclusive" content. How I missed it for as long as I did is beyond me.

Actually, I think I'll post a direct link. I want as many people as possible to see the changes I made to make the content more uniquely his:

Might wanna re-check that site Rich

Still looks fine to me.

The link I posted is to the site put up by the guy who stole my content. I simply redirected the picture to a more suitable one.

Hopefully he doesn't check his blog very often. I want it to stay up for a while.

The pictures aren't substituted when I view it. No horses visible.

In much earlier days, people used goatse.jpg... :hairraise::hairraise::hairraise:

You probably have referrers disabled in your browser, or you're running behind a firewall or proxy that strips the referrers.

I could get around that by redirecting from blank referrers, but that would cause anyone who's blocking referrers to see a horse's posterior instead of the correct images, which would be a bit too much.

Horse's posteriors and your comments are working for me.

Nice touch.

He still has links to your site's content in the body, as well!

Hot links.

No ketchup.

Yeah, but I'm leaving those active. Only hotlinks to images are being redirected. The links to pages coming from that site could also be redirected, but there's really no point to doing that. They're sending me traffic, as well as making it easy for visitors to see that he plagiarized the content. The hotlinks being redirected to equine posteriors proves who's at the controls.

Classic! :rofl::rofl:

or tubgirl.

Nick ran into that issue on here once I think.

Wasn't me! Someone was posting a thread about his flight around NYC on 9/11/2001, and the picture was replaced with TubGirl.

I use TubGirl to spam people who abuse my open wifi signal when they are dumb enough to have their printer shared on the network. Nothing like emptying their ink cartridge printing smut.

Although, its a great hotlink resolver. Keeps people honest through embarrassment.

FYI - he does link to your page in one of the articles, kind of giving you credit.

Maybe. Or maybe he just copied and pasted -- links and all. The word "exclusive" really annoyed me.

I'm pretty curious how long it'll take before he notices the equines.

My legitimate site gets a lot of visits by kids, and I suppose the plagiarized one does, too. Serving a picture of TubGirl (at least the TubGirl that I know so well) would therefore be inappropriate.

A horse's butt gets the point across without putting obscenity in front of youngsters' eyes (unless one believes that naked animals are obscene). Not that today's kids haven't seen it before, but I don't want to be the one to show it to them.

Or the comments. Those are priceless.

Thanks for the chuckle.

Heh. Just saw that.

These guys are GREAT! :goofy:

Yea, I guess so.

If you read their profile it is apparent why they are cutting and pasting the English into their blog instead of writing it themselves.

Here it is, Monday AM, and the horse photos are still up and the comments are still there.

I suspect that they don't check their blog very often, or perhaps they have referrers disabled in their browsers and don't even know the images are being redirected, or perhaps they know and don't care.

Well, then they certainly don't read the comments!
