Pittsfield, WI (Carter Airport) plane down

Experimental plane, pilot alive but the deputies described the injuries as life-threatening. He was airlifted to the hospital in Green Bay. The pilot's name is Michael, 67 yrs old. The witness described a "sputter" from the engine, then the pilot trying to return to the runway. He, unfortunately, didn't make it back there.

Maybe he didn't check the entire fuel system to confirm it would work at high angles of attack. ?

Yes. The proper protocol is the jack the plane into various attitudes and test the fuel flow to quantify adequate flows.
