I'm coming up to the twin cities for a wedding and spend a few days with the family this week. I've not flown up there in 7 - 8 years. Any great places to fly to up there? I'll be flying out of SGS if I can make it happen.

Fly up north and take in the Fall colors. Madeline Island is a nice little jaunt from the Twin Cities.

Ahh yes, KSGS is a nice airport. The A/D building has a ton of scale models and r/c airplanes in it. One hangar down is the CAF hangar with a B25, P51, and some other planes.

Flying along the Mississippi river could be kinda scenic. This is Lake Pepin about 20 miles southeast of KRGK. That point on the nearest left bank is marked on the sectional as Lake City.

Not too far away from KSGS is the narrow private air strip of Voyager Village. There is a golf course and restaurant on field.

About 120nm to the north is Duluth. The harbor area on the west side of the Aerial Lift Bridge could make a good day trip. Either stop in KDLH and get a crew car at Monaco Aviation or stop at KDYT and call a cab, or do what I do and ride a bike that you've brought along. At KSUW there is a restaurant on the field called The Upper Deck.

KDYT... it can get rather windy.

If you keep going north, you can follow the shore of Lake Superior, flyby Split Rock Lighthouse, and turn around to land at KTWM, get the crew car, and goto Betty's Pies for lunch and pie. You'll want to call ahead to inquire about the crew car though as it is not obvious... KTWM also generally has the cheapest gas in the area.

I was at STP two weeks ago. It was fun being vectored over the top of MSP, over downtown St. Paul, and over the water. Although you may get some of that going into SGS. I had my first juicy lucy ever. And some alligator at the state fair.

I was trying to remember when the fall colors started. I thought I would be a week or two early still.

Duluth is a great area to fly to, and might have to again. It has been years since I was last up there. Thanks for the reminder.

I used to fly out to Voyager Village for dinner when I lived up there.

Yes, SGS is a great airport. A close friend has a couple hangars there and is restoring a Stinson.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I am still waiting to hear if the Warrior I uses to fly is available this weekend. Surprisingly I am still listed on the insurance policy.
