Check Dawson Aircraft Salvage or Texas Aircraft Salvage and just buy a complete used cap, then just take off the part you need. More cost effective.

you can buy the individual pieces to the gas cap, and they aren't cheap but they're not outrageous compared to a whole new cap. The rubber check valve and the cap seal is less than $20, I think the metal retainer with the tabs is $22.

Privett Aviation, $100 each. Gaskets are $5 each from many sources.

Dawson or White Industries will have a serviceable used cap.

For the most common Piper gas cap made from 1966-1996, the metal lock tab is 473-151. Formerly part number 66810-00.

Ask your dealer why he doesn't know this.

There are dozens of new or used ones available.

OP, I hate to bring up this old thread but I'm experiencing the exact issue you've described. My fuel caps are loose and water gets in as a result. I replaced the gasket, but the same it's just as loose. Did you find the part with wear or did you just replace the entire cap? Thanks.
