Plane narrowly misses downtown St. Petersburg condo towers, crashes in Vinoy Park

Reports indicated the plane was flying south over the city and had just been cleared to land at the downtown Albert Whitted Airport when the pilot reported engine failure. Eyewitnesses said it just missed the Vinoy condominium towers before it struck a tree, tearing the left wing and landing gear from the plane and spinning it, leaving it upright and facing east toward the bay.

Yes, the airports around here are surrounded by congestion. Going down near any of them is not a pleasant thought.

Looks like these guys were en route from Tallahassee.
