After nearly six months flying the Archer, I just learned about a preflight item that I never knew existed. So I thought I’d share for our other Piper flyers incase they also don’t know.

The aft spar attachment under the flap near the wing root as pictured here :

Obviously it’s not on any checklists that I’ve seen, but it’s still a good item to inspect prior to any flight.

Is that a locknut or a castle nut/cotter?

In the RV world, we have a similar rear spar attach. It is considered a rotating joint (a gazillionth of a degree with every wing flex), and a castellated nut/drilled bolt/cotter are specified.

I watched the same video and learned from it

It’s cracked! Fly a composite and you won’t have to worry about that. ;)

I also watched that video, learned a place to check on a "super preflight" ( one in 20, when I get really dirty ). Also heard a lot of loose terminology about how a PA28 wing is attached.
