Your green piece of flyboy plastic with no identifiable information on it is considered voter ID here.

Didn't know this until today.

I'm tempted to not mail in my ballot and show up with a pilot's license just to watch some poor volunteer judge's head explode, when they're told the have to accept it with no address on it.

Not so sure they have to accept it

"The following types of identification are acceptable and must have a Colorado address"

Posting it here where somebody might actually think its interesting and ironic would trump a schlep to the voting both, at least at my digs. 'Sides that, most of the volunteers are people my age who confuse easily anyway, and without any smart-alek whippersnappers trying to play tricks on them.

My dad tried his Colorado Concealed Carry (which is photo ID here and has your address). Just for fun. They said no. ;)

Heck of a lot better ID than a pilot's license.

that got me looking at KS voter ID laws = you must have a valid, unexpired, photo ID. Exceptions are if you are >=65 y.o, then you can use an expired photo ID.

Funny - I don't remember any outcry when these new rules went into effect. In other states it's been a huge deal to try to get voter ID laws passed.

And many of the listed IDs have no address, e.g birth certificate.

It's actually Colorado state law. I'd noticed the inclusion of the pilot certificate myself. Many years ago when we were younger a bunch of us from Maryland got carded going into a bar. The bartender is reading "Maryland, Maryland, Maryland, ..." off the IDs until he gets to mine which says "United States of America."

Besides, it does have my picture on it. I'm the guy on the left with the mustache. I don't know who that other chap is.

you must be reading the wrong newspapers.

I don't think so - I really don't remember any big stink about it in KS the way it's happened in other states. And it's just been in the last 4 years, too. The last time I voted in a presidential election, the only people required to show photo ID were voters who had never voted before.

i read plenty about it on kansas.com.

and i don't think the Kansas law requires photo ID to vote, it is required to register to vote. but i could be wrong.

our wonderful secretary of state is behind most of the other states voter id laws.

What timing! I just got a letter from the friendly voter services folks in VA (or whatever they're called), and on the list of acceptable IDs was a VA concealed carry permit/license/whatever it's called.

Tony,

I just looked on-line - the law does say photo ID is now required to vote in person. Starting Jan 1, you must also prove citizenship to register.

The new ID rules went into effect April 2011. It probably did make the news, but I must have just missed it.

oh ok. i didn't mind taking advantage of needing to be at the DMV this summer and registering to vote then. just sent in my form to vote by mail, it did ask for DL #.

In the low attendance votes where there is not a line, it is informative to try different IDs. County run sport complex photo ID with address -- no: Expired drivers license -- no, but that was an error, it and current or expired passport should have been ok: letter from election board, no photo, but with name and address telling where to vote -- ok.

It's a picture of me - hair matches (close).

At least now I know who the other chap is on my certificate. How did your picture get on it?

Did they ever not have your address?

well....mine has my PO box, not my voting address. could be interesting if I tried to use it, but I just received my mail-in ballot today. all I have to do is prove to myself that I'm me.

I'm waiting for my mail-in ballot but I guess the Pony Express takes a long time to ride out here in the sticks.

At least your state requires an ID. We're trying to get that here in MN whic is second only to Chicago in loose voting practices.

Waddya mean "loose voting practices"? Everyone at the cemetaries are registered voters!

It doesn't if you are a mail-in voter unless it's your first time voting.

Actually, we had to send a driver's license number (ostensibly to match the names) when we signed up (years ago) for mail-in ballots, if I recall...? I think there were alternatives where you could show up in-person to sign up for mail-in with the usual list of ID items, but if you wanted to sign up via the website or paper mail (I forget what it was), they wanted a Driver's License number. I think.

I'll let you know if they make you write in your DL number when I get the ballot. I believe the rule is that you need to send in a copy of ID the first time. I know you don't need to do that in subsequent years, however you may need to write in your DL number.

Yeah, not the ballot. Just need the DL to sign up to GET the ballot by mail.

After that, it's just your signature on the ballot.
