Pilotless aircraft.

Hopefully, getting someone to buy a ticket to ride on one is waaaaay off.

How would this effect us (assuming one wasn't planning a career as an airline pilot)?

The future for pilots is rearing its ugly head.
Is there a particular reason why you attached this importance to Phantom Ray today... That system was in testing since last year. Meanwhile, Global Hawk shares the airspace with us now. Would it not be a more pertinent example?

i don't get it. i was in a *redacted* on a taxiway blocking a UAV in 99. what's the big fuss. because its bigger? i'm sure you can remote control a 747 - i do it on flight sim. they act like they created a digital video disc.

Airbus pilots are already computer operators. Newer Boeing drivers are only slightly less so.

I've always said it'll take video of the entire software development team ascending the airstair and strapping in for an unmanned flight before the public will even consider it, though.

It'll happen first in cargo. And there will be some spectacular accidents with Timmy's Christmas presents burning on the runway in Nashville too.

It'll be a while. But it'll slowly happen.
