Flies from Homestead to a nearby grass strip, then to KOBE at 1 a.m...1/2 hour on the ground, departs at 3:00 am apparently headed back to KOBE.

As mentioned in a comment on the linked article, over the grass strip is where ADS-B picked him up. He stated he departed from Homestead. That makes more sense than smuggling. He’d have to be just about the world’s stupidest smuggler to have his transponder on.

There are a fair number of trainers up at really late, odd hours in Florida. Between flight schools’ jammed schedules and people working multiple jobs to pay for flight training, it’s not unusual.
