Phyillis Diller Dead At 95

RIP. She was one of my favorite "classic" comidians.

"A bachelor is a guy who never made the same mistake once."

"You know you're old if they have discontinued your blood type."

She was always woth watching on Johnny Carson and the Dean Martin Roasts. (that's some really old, but good, TV shows, Kim, Jesse, and Greg.)

I loved the Dean Martin roasts. He would get everyone on that show. The celebrity list was a who's who of entertainment from several decades, and Don Rickles would make fun of them all.

I got to meet her once, a very odd chance encounter, I was in uniform, she looked at me and smiled and said " I hate Jane too"

I just stood there with my mouth open.

And a truly nice person, so I'm told. A friend of mine was the opening act the first time Phyllis walked onstage at the Purple Onion, and they kept in touch until the end.

"You know you're getting old when your walker has air bags"

(from her last show in 2004)

That's about the nicest tribute you could make! :)

I really miss that entire generation, and previous generation of comedians, and entertainers. I think Don Rickles is the only one still around. They didn't have to curse, get overtly sexual or raunchy. They were just plain talented.

Very much agree with the above.

When XM radio first came on the scene, I loved the classic comedy channel that had many of the comics you speak of. Henny Youngman, George Burns, Groucho, Steve Harvey, Bob Hope, Milton Berle, and more.

I still fondly remember Laugh-In.

Some that are still alive that I really like are the Smother's Brothers and Bob Newhart.

Here is Bob Newhart doing a bit about being an air traffic controller.

DUDE!!! You obviously never saw any of their Vegas acts...:rofl::rofl: Much blueness from that entire generation, it's just they had to modify for Carson and cable didn't exist.

The Borscht Belt stuff actually made Vegas look tame. Unlike a lot of today's standup, though, they could be funny with a clean act. The highlight DVD's available are worth seeing, but it'll spoil you. I can't stand watching Leno or Letterman for days after seeing one. Admittedly, it's the best stuff they ever did, but nothing today even approaches it.

It still wasn't as bad as today, more inuendo than anything. Yes there Vegas acts were more raunchy, but still nothing like what we hear from so called entertainers today.

My point is that they were still very funny, and entertaining even with the TV censorhsip of the time.

I don't disagree with that, however profanity in their lounge acts was pervasive. Even Bob Barker was pretty raunchy during Price is Right tapings when it wasn't rolling.

Agreed. But profanity is one thing, subject matter is another, and I think the much of the subject matter today is just banal, and gross.
