Finding out about Tony Scarpelli today and reading some comments got me thinking about a friend of mine I've known for almost 30 yrs. She's had cancer for a while and I just got a Christmas card from her yesterday. She said she's stopped chemo and started hospice.

Not much to say here, except that you never know when or how, so maybe take a few minutes every now and then and call someone you haven't talked to for a while. It might do you both some good. And you never know if you'll get another chance.

Matthew,

My deepest condolences for your friend. I went through something similar 9 years ago with my dad. He came back into my life in 2004, in the end stages of AIDS, he wanted to be a part of my life and make up for all the years we had lost. I got tired of listening to him badmouth my grandparents who raised me, and stopped answering his calls. He was too sick to come to my wedding in April of 05. Just after Christmas 2005, the calls stopped abruptly. I thought thank god, he gave up.. My mom told me shortly after the new year that he had passed on new year's eve, and it took them a few days to find him, as he didn't really have any friends or family, just a dog. Looking back in the days that followed, everything he told me was the same thing my mom had been telling me my whole entire life. I tracked down his body, had him cremated, and had his ashes buried in the veterans cemetery in San Diego. It's been 9 years, and I still have those regrets. Eyes are getting quite misty as i type this.I completely agree with everything you have written above.

A plane went down at my local airport (the NTSB database website is down right now) about 10 years ago.

On board were a husband and wife that were hitching a ride to go on an anniversary vacation.

I remember watching the local news and a reporter was shoving a microphone into the face of their adult son, asking for his reaction. He looked straight at the reporter and said something like, "It shows that you never know when it'll happen to you, so make your peace while you can" and walked away.

True friends are there untill the end. Reach out and re afirm your relationships. I can remember taking a good friend on his last flight to osh.

Sorry to hear about your freind.

Wow, so so sorry and sad.

My Mom after living here all her life at the age of 81 had to move away. She moved closer to my sister, she has the means and all t take care of her in her old age. Me not so much.

Her moving was on condition of her selling her home. I thought it will be a year or so before she sells it. Guess what, it sold december 1st. They closed the 11th. She moved the 12th.

Took me by surprise. I called her on the phone and told her everything in my life I was sorry for putting her through. For all the things I did not do and should have done.

I told myself this is Gods way of preparing me for when she passes. I try to talk to her daily now. I miss her so very much, but at least she is just a phone call away. I know the day is coming she won't be.

Tony
