The relatively new Phillips multi Grade Victory oil is supposed (according to my mechanic) to contain a similar additive package equivalent to camguard, thus obviating the need for any additional additives such as camguard. Any thoughts?

My understanding is that Victory has the components of Lycoming additive LW-16702 included, but not the additional components in Camguard that make the oil 'cling' to the engine parts, which help protect the engine during periods of extended down time.

Your mechanic is misinformed. Here's a couple of recent articles in Aviation Consumer that you might want to share with him. Bottom line: don't use the Lycoming additive (included in Victory) unless you really HAVE to... which means, unless you have an O320A2HD engine in your airplane and there's an AD requiring it.

Otherwise, if you have corrosion concerns, that is, you fly less than twice a week, use Camguard to protect your engine.
