I've been debating back and forth over the past few days on whether I want to get the Philips Hue light system.

My only issue is it worth the fact that its a "smart" light bulb.

Some of my potential uses would be a sunrise alarm clock, automatic lights based on my location, and some random IFTTT integration.

I have a amazon gift card that I want to use. So the card is either going to be used for this or a Jawbone UP24 fitness band.

Does anyone use the system?

Yep, it's a neat system. Basically it works like an old TV with RGB elements and it mixes them for color. There has been an Italian system that I currently can't remember the name of, that has been around for a few years now, that I have installed on boats, it required dedicated wiring and uses a touch panel on the wall to control. I checked out the Phillips system at a dealer not long ago and it was really nice allowing control from the iPad (or whatever smart phone device) I use to regulate most of the cabin systems. If you like to be able to control your lighting for mood or effect, it's a really nice system.

We have a set (3) at home, and love them. My only complaint is that I wish they were capable of being a little bit brighter - they're definitely energy efficient at only 9 watts, but they do better in situations where you need light in the immediate vicinity, such as a hallway, or bedside lamp. They're not as good at filling larger rooms with light.

Would they be good for the main overhead bedroom light when paired with a desk lamp?

My planned locations are my main overhead bedroom light, desk lamp, and either the bathroom or living room. The last two locations are dependent on my roommates approval.

I think it'd be fine for an overhead bedroom lamp. I have one in a standing lamp in one corner of my living room, and for that I feel it's a bit dimmer than I'd ideally like, but for a bedroom it should be fine - especially since you're lighting in from the center.

They really are pretty cool. :)

How's the sunrise feature and do you integrate your system with IFTTT?

We don't use a sunrise feature with our Hue setup. When my wife and I are home, we tend to just sleep until we wake up naturally. We don't have a Hue bulb in the bedroom anyway.

I do have a couple of IFTTT items set up, although they tend to be more of a novelty. One changes the living room light to my college team's colors during football games, and another changes one bulb I have in the study different colors depending on the traffic situation to LAX. Allows me a one glance look at how bad the freeway is as I'm getting ready for work. :wink2:
