Passport status site really down?

Dang! And I have three applications pending right now. I hope they come in before the end of May.

This is news?

Socialist governments don't let the citizens leave, ya know.

Trying not to send this to SZ- does the link work for any of you?

...and they want these same guys to take over our health care?
My most recent (a couple weeks ago) experience with the passport office was a model of efficiency. Because of my work I always need to have a current passport and mine was coming up for renewal. I called the passport office and they told me to make an appointment on line, bring my application and photos and have a letter from my employer or an itinerary showing travel in the next 14 days and I could walk out the same day. They were right. My appointment was for 0830 where they took my paperwork. They told me to come back at 1100, and it was done. The catch to this is that you need to go to one of the main passport offices of which there are not very many many in the country but Denver happens to be one of them. Otherwise, I think it takes a few days by FedEx.

But they can't keep a web site running properly....

...and the Gummint is issuing "permits" to allow us to fly in to our home country.

Electronically.

My new passport arrived today. Just under 4 weeks door-to-door.

The web link mentioned in the original post is still down.
Maybe we should let them have the user's fee- paid by internet!
Nawwww- the government never messes up a site that lets them collect money!

Wow 4 weeks!

My first passport was issued while I waited. The nest two came within 48 hours of ordering. 4 weeks!! They have slowed down. Did you also spring for the new passport card that will allow you to drive to Canada or Mexico without having your booklet passport?

My passport is up in 2014 and I want to order one of those cards to carry with me in case I am in San Diego and get a hankering for lobsters at Puerto Nuaevo and need to get across the border.

The website is outsourced to a private company.
So? The government is still responsible. We held the FAA ultimately responsible when LockMart was having problems with the flight service stations. In the private sector most of us hold the company we deal with responsible for services provided, even if the services were outsourced. None of us care that customer service was outsourced to a company in India or Nebraska.

I didn't get the card as it is a long drive to either country from here. All joking aside, the few times I'm visiting a border town, I'll just take the passport.

The wait is down from 6+ weeks a year or two ago. If you want the passport within 2 weeks, they charge a premium for expedited service.

Well it seems, as in the example you noted, that service is most always worse once the government lets the private sector take something over. Kinda blows the whole 'government sucks at everything' theory that a bunch of people have been expousing in this thread and other non-SZ threads fo late.

one of the very few things I miss about living out there - langostas, langustinos, camarones e cervesas in puerto nuevo... and then the fish market and fish tacos in Ensenada ... and the diving ... ok, that's about it. Don't let my wife read this, or we'll be living there again in a heartbeat.

I seem to remember that the private security the airlines used for screening weren't as bad as the TSA has been. OTOH, they may have been as bad if they had to enforce the same rules (3 oz liquid, 1 qt bag, double secret rules, etc, etc). The postal service has worked reasonably well. Seems to be a mixed bag.

Seems to be a mixed bag.
Of that I will agree. I was mostly making my comment in reply to the knee jerk post early on in this thread.

The government can do some things way better than the private sector and the private sector can do some things way better than the government. The trend to think that privatization is the solution for everything is just as wrong as the idea that the government is the solution for everything. If I say more we head into SZ territory.

Private sector != private sector working on government contract

The two should never be compared nor contrasted in relation to each other or in relation to the way the role could be handled by the government itself.

Now, the site is going well. For applying a passport application taking 4-5 days for verification.

Holy necrothread, Batman!

I actually sent an e-mail to Hilary about it (lasy year) and it was working the next day after weeks of not working, but I never got a reply back from her or any of her minions. I don't know if it was coincidence or someone did an investigation and got someone to do their job. I kept the e-mail polite and pointed to the site.
