In another thread somebody recommended putting off panel upgrades until the Part 23 rewrite was "clarified." What is that about and how close is it to happening. Is there a chance in the near future that radios and nav equipment can be changed in a certified airplane without a bottomless bucket of money?

Too bad the Primary Category discussion has disappeared. It would have allowed many older vintage/unsupported aircraft to have been maintained similar to an E-AB with owner being able to do much more work.

Yup. I turned the page and walked away from that avenue when I read the finalized implementation. It's over. I'll go the way @Jay Honeck on here did; I'll chuck the Piper when the engine grenades and buy an exp 2 seater when the mission calls for it. In the mean time I won't spend a dime on upgrades on the thing. Strictly airworthiness maintenance. I'll keep flying the WOT snot out of it. Oil is cheaper than an overhaul :D Cosmetics can go to hell for all I care. It's essentially a buy low sell low strategy, something most of the "pride in ownership" zealots on here deride, but it works for me.

As to the panel upgrades, what people are not coming to grips with is that, said dynon STC hasn't been priced yet. So just because the box is non-certified and thus carries a certain market pricing that makes exAB owners gloat, and certified owners salivate, y'all haven't got a clue what they'll upcharge you on the STC. Then there is the labor cost the exABers can sidestep if they want to, whereas that's labor you're gonna have to pay to install in a certified can. Nowhere near the exAB installed price. I think a lot of people will be disillusioned when they realize the installed price on the experimental box is closer to the "aspen box" installed price, than the experimental-on-exAB installed price.

I'm selling my Swift because I bought an RV-4. I'll keep my J-3, but it is reasonably cheap and requires no avionics, even under the KMEM Class B veil. Unless I run across some really sweet antique with a radial, I don't see me going back with any more certified a/c either.

The re write is very disappointing . The FAA is not going to relinquish control easily.
