Does operation of model aircraft under Part 101 require membership in the AMA or a similar organization and/or operation from a sanctioned field to comply with 101.41(b)?
101.41(b) The aircraft is operated in accordance with a community-based set of safety guidelines and within the programming of a nationwide community-based organization;

I believe the only thing you are required to have an AMA membership for is flying at AMA fields.

Based on this FAA webpage, the only requirement listed is to follow community guidelines instead of have membership.

I thought that the only reason to join AMA was you got some weird kinda of insurance in case of an accident type thing - at lesser that what a friend told me years ago when I joined. But since let lapse and still fly models from time to time.

The FAA has publicly acknowledged AMA as a CBO but there’s no requirement to be a member. Only requirement is to follow a set of guidelines from a CBO. Membership in any of them isn’t required.
