Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean that someone isn't really after you.

And Google is watching you even more than the government is..... puts the credit bureaus to shame.

I doubt that's even a real prototype... it wouldn't really need articulated legs with servos, etc. The wings seem way too small for it, too. But with nanotech, eventually there will be even smaller, mechanically simpler robotic "no see 'ums" that can fly around, or be put in drinks or food.
Kinda disturbing, but on the other hand, anything that makes law enforcement or counter-terrorism more precise and less disruptive is a good thing, IMHO.

We have a guy at work who is paranoid about "Big Brother" and we screw with him all the time. Once we got a small "spy" camera (fake) and hid in a place he would obviously find it. When he found it we had the Captain leak info to him that the County now wants to see how good we do our jobs. His reaction was priceless and still brought up on a regular basis.

Among other things, G indexes this site (along with most others on the Internet).

Ummm, yeah. That's how they provide search results. We like search results, right?

Google street view cars drive the public streets taking pictures. That way we get photos of places when we search for them on Google Maps. We like having a photo of the bank or restaurant when we search for its location, right?

When you go to a web site and press the +1 button it generates a signal to google to better serve you ads and search results. We might not like ads but I'd sure prefer that to paying by the minute for the Internet ala AOL. Plus, if I'm going to see an ad I'd rather it be targeted to something I at least care about. Now I get adult diaper and tampon ads on TV. Google has never served me those useless ads. That's good, right?

Google Latitudes allows your friends and family (anyone you authorize really) to see where you are at all times as long as you enable tracking through the app. So google knows where you are. Okay but so does the phone company and they won't share the info. Well, at least not with you. All the phone companies will, however, share that info with any law enforcement agency with just a request and a fee. No warrant required as the Supreme Court ruled that geo data is NOT covered under privacy. Google gives me, the user, access to that same information the cellular companies have and have been sharing with the government for a fee without telling you. Hiding from that data doesnt make it go away. In that light id like to know what they (the government) has access to That's good, right?

Google Voice recorders your voice mails and converts them to text and will send you a text message. Google recording and saving millions of people's voices? Well, that has enabled Google voice recognition software to be leaps and bounds above the competition. Only Apple has recently caught up with Siri.

Google is not scary with their tracking. Every bit of personal data is collected in aggragit and used for the benifit of the user. They may fall short of thief mission statement of 'Do No Evil' from time to time (Buzz Launch for example) but they are LIGHT YEARS ahead of any other company.

WTF is counter-terrorism? A clown squirting water out of a flower on his lapel?

Mommy holding her kid on a stormy night?

How in gods name did we get into a war on feelings? How's that gonna end? ...Ever?

btw, this isn't aimed at you Rotty. Please don't take it personal. Lot's of folks these days feel the same way. It just ticks me off to no end that we allow this war on a feeling. We give up so much in the name of a false sense of security. Ya want to prevent the next 9/11? That was accomplished on 9/11 by three in the afternoon. No more hijackers allowed in cockpits. That's it. Problem solved. Fine, put a better door in to enforce that, but you're done right there.

But no, we have the TSA and wars on feelings. Great.

...although I must say I owe 80% of my job to the TSA and the remaining 20% to crappy airline service.
:mad2:

I'm not talking about spying on everybody as some sort of security measure... surrendering more personal liberty does not make me feel safer, believe me. But drones like this could be valuable in taking out "bad guys" with minimal collateral damage or risk to regular and covert soldiers. Same with law enforcement... hostage situations, etc.
An insectoid drone is sort of the ultimate in "see around corners" military/paramilitary tech; potentially very useful.

Not any cell provider I have ever dealt with. They require a court order, but they don't charge us for the info. If it's an emergency where someone is in personal danger, they will give us the location fairly quickly but still need a court order sent as a followup.

Blah, blah, blah... Google is great and they are LIGHT YEARS ahead of any other company.

Wow, Someone took a big gulp of the Koolaid

Now, if you all will excuse me, I must burn my computer, move to a new location, open another email account and re-register on PoA under a new alias to keep the "watchers" from finding me now that I have finally made my first post. :yikes:

You just keep right on believing that. I'll mix some more kool-aid for you.

"You" arre just the means to the end... it's not about the user, it's about making money from advertisers by selling personal information about you and your habits. That you see some benefit only serves to make it a bit more palatable. This is about making money, not benefit for the user.

I'm amazed that nobody's come up with a free cell phone as long as you agree to let them sell any data they collect from it, like where you shop, eat, and travel to based on GPS info; what businesses you call; what websites you visit; what time you go to work, where you work, and on and on.

I admit, while I can use technology, I am IT challenged. Aren't there devices available to block your IP address, or do these sited not allow their use without a valid IP? I think I just answered my own question.

Why not register an IP ananomously? Yeah, I know pretty basic stuff, but I've never really been concerned about it before.

Wait until cash disappears in favor of electronic script and all business transactions no matter how large or small necessarily have to from addresses tags of some kind.

It's coming.

I'm not surprised. They probably already know that the vast majority of people who would take advantage of that deal are not in any target audience they would want to track, unless they were advertising for credit consolidation, pawn shops, payday loan sharks, personal injury lawyers or McDonalds.

It worked for a while with computers & the internet. Some of the carriers, though, have a huge trove of information that they can use for selling to advertisers. Why provide the service for free if you can both charge for it & get the data anyway?

There are anonymizers (proxies) out there, but a lot of web sites block them because they are heavily abused. Bugmenot is a resource for avoiding registration at some sites.... and using Firefox with add-ons like AdblockPlus and ghostery can reduce tracking.
