PA people...

Well it depends what you want. Williamsport is in north central PA, and not really near anything. Its a small town that has passed its heyday, but if you like quiet and a more rural setting, you may like it. If you deer hunt, you'll probably like it. If you are a big city person, you may not.

Yes, the Little League hall of fame is there and they play the champinoships there also.

It is also home of Lycoming. You know the place that makes many of our aircraft engines.

KIPT. Nice little class D with a good little diner style restaurant on the field. Anything else you need to know about a place than that? :D Can't speak for the town, except the description above is probably correct. Not the most lively part of the state, kinda far away from Philly and Pit etc, if you are into city living. FSS has a station there but it is slated to go away with the consolidation under private enterprise.

Fairly remote, old industrial town. Between the mountains, it's not far from some scenic areas and winter sports (been up there for X-C skiing).

If you like a more rural area, might be OK, but it's a pretty long way from a major city.

Missa, I have spent a lot of time in Williamsport over the past three years. For the most part folks are pretty friendly. City or should I say town is located on the banks of the Susquehanna. As stated it is in North Central PA. Lots of out door sports, Hiking, Fishing hunting etc. Close to The Grand Canyon of PA. Not to bad a drive to State College PA and the PSU games. Most of the nicer neighborhoods are in a suburb called Loyalsock just west of the town. Little League hall of fame is actually in south williamsport and during the series most locals try to leave town on vacation due to the crowds and traffic. Why do you ask about Williamsport?

I've been investigating a job oppertunity in Williamsport, I havn't gotten an offer or anything yet so this topic my be for nothing...

I've lived in the Detroit metro all of my life, I do like camping, hiking, and biking, but I'm not a hunter and I have only fished when my boyfreind at the time agreed to be in charge of handling all things icky. I'm not agianst hunting and if I can find someone who will give me venision bucharded to my standards, I have a some great recipies (you've got to get the silver skin off before you freaze the meat or it gives the meat that strong gamey taste, no bucher I know does deer right, it has to be a picky hunter that buchers himself) . I just don't have the stomac for killing my own food... I'm sure if I was starving I would figure it out but I'm not so I don't hunt. :) The up side I see is I hate the commute here and there is nothing like 696 in Williamsport plus they have rail trails near by which look like a really great place to go riding on weekends and I would be able to buy a really nice house for not too much money compared to the Detoit area. There is a theater and a symphony but it definaly is a lot less metroplitan then I'm use to. I didn't see a Panera or a Starbuck the entire time I was there. (I'm not sure if that a bad thing or not). I saw on the area map there there is a mall (I'm use to having my pick of 5 malls and several shopping strips). I've started playing soccer reciently and I really am into it, I saw on the map several feilds but I'm not sure if they would have a over 30 beginer womens rec league... where no one cares about the score.

I'm just trying to get an idea of what I have to weigh, if I get an offer of a really cool job.

Adam and others gave very nice synopsis. When we lived in PA, we use to backpack the Loyalsock and other trails up near there. A good friend of mine also has a house in the woods just north of Lock Haven that we go to a lot. If you can find the private field "Ponderosa" that's where its located. My buddy flies hos Bonanza in and out of there on occassion. Its a nice area for outdoor activities. Frankly, I wouldn't mind not seeing Strabucks, Panera and all the other chains where I live. If you have a plane, or access to a plane, your a pretty short hop from the coast and big cities like New York and Philly if you want that.

Missa,

Lots of the towns in northern PA were coal mine towns and as someone else said are past their prime now that coal is not the fuel of choice. I would use the word depressed (and depressing) for some of the areas though I've not been to Wiliamsport in a long time and so don't know if that town is making out better than others.

If the job you are looking at depends on the local economy I would recommend a lot of research to determine if the firm and their products are viable over the long haul in that area. If the products have a wider appeal and the clients of the firm are not local or regional then you might be on to something if you are looking for a more laid back lifestyle.

When I think about moving to an area like that some things I consider include:
- Medical facilities (which won't be up to par with big city and surrounding suburban standards).
- Educational facilities (not as many, not as good continuing eduction choices for my wife and myself not to mention the quality of primary and secondary schools for my kids).
- Museums, zoos and other forms of entertainment (will not be as large and plentiful).
- Shopping (lots of stuff that is readily available at the local market won't be available at all - this includes fresh food and other packaged products).
- People. Generally I'd say I've run into great people in small towns and rural areas but there not as many people to pick from when you are making friends.
- Weather. Compared to where I live now the winters in Williamsport would be a bit longer and a bit colder but it might not be that different from Detroit (which is where it sounds like you are now).
- Flying. The surrounding terrain is something to take note of. Willaimsport is at 529 feet and the highest obstacle on the sectional quadrangle is 2,900 feet. The hills in the area extend up into the 2,000 foot level. No they are not the Rockies but flying the areas in marginal VFR or worse weather would be more demanding than lower, flatter areas (to say the least).

Well, even will all less then stellar opinion of Williamsport given here, after receiving the job offer I decided to give it a try. I hope that the interest in the job can overcome the possible lack of anything else interesting. As a bonus I'll have easy access to airplanes and will be able to get out on weekends as needed. I should be arriving sometime around April 10th. PA here I come.

Actually, the opinions sounded wonderful to me LOL. Much more my speed than the Philly burbs, where I live now. Besides, as you say you can always fly a couple hours and get your fill of city goodies :)

Congrats on the new job!!

Yes I did and made initial contact today. I'm still not sure what I need to ask him yet but I'm sure he will be a wonderful resourse for me. I'm still not sure all what I'll need yet as I have never moved outside the Detroit area before, I started thinking today... new credit union, insurance, even a new place to get my hair cut! :hairraise: It's scary but I'll just take it one step at a time and now I have someone else to ask about the area.

Thanks!

As you have probably noticed from the threads, there is a fairly active group of us out here for fly-ins. Make sure to catch up with Adam's thread for the fly-in at LOM in May. That barbeque was a lot of fun for all last year. And IPT really is a nice little Delta. My wife and I really enjoy the run up to eat at the restaurant in the terminal. Where else can you park right at the base of the tower and walk to the terminal for good food, and an excellent mountain view across the runways? You'll like that part.

Welcome to PA!

Thanks for the review, Jim! IPT is a planned flight for us. I was hoping it would be worth it :)

I noticed the view while I was there last week... but I didn't see the resturaunt, I'll have to look into that. Right now I'm tenitively planning on making the FlyBQ but I need to get settled and checked out in the planes before I can make a final commitment to be there. However there was also an offer on the Babes board of a ride in case I wasn't checked out in time. I'm going to make the effort to be there.

Upstairs from the "terminal". It's sort of diner-ish, but in a good way. Friendly service and local food. Plus, being upstairs, you REALLY get the view. Only downside with IPT is the winds off that hill can make short final entertaining sometimes. Otherwise, it's really one of my favorite little D airports.

Cool, I know nothing pro or con about working for them, but I think it is quite cool to be a pilot working for an aviation company. Good for you, have fun!

Missa,

I hope the job isn't customer service or call center work in regards to SB 569.

Good luck with your move...I'm sure you know that moving and taking a new job are amoung the most stressful things you can do in your life. Take care.

It is customer service, but not in THAT way and it has nothing to do with SBs. I will be a Sr. Applications Engineer responsible for assisting the OEM customers in the design and validation of the installation of the engine into the airframe.

That's great Missa. PA is a great place to live and work. I think you'll nejoy the area, and the cost of living, no traffic, etc. Plus you can get to a lot fo places from there.

Well I know the state liquor stores were opening some of their locations on Sundays. Which was a BIG difference from the past. But, yeah its basically socialism wiht higher prices, etc.

Some of that is changing so while not like free enterprise it is at least better than it was (shoot I remember when public bars couldn't open on Sundays, making everyone very patriotic and join the VFW and American Legion -where they just happen to offer a private bar)...the head of the PA LCB is very pro-active...opening some stores on Sunday, putting LCB stores inside of grocery stores were two of his projects. From what I understand he is also very into wine and has started using the states buying power to advantage. The state of PA is the largest purchaser of wine and from what I gather more and better wines are showing up in the state controlled stores at better price points. Part of the issue on prices is out of the hands of the head of LCB as there is still a tax on all LCB products in PA that was put in place to help pay for the great Johnstown flood of, get this, 1889.

Agreed. If you look at the # of cool places you can get to in a 2-3hr Skyhawk ride, you'll be impressed.

IPT was where I went for my first student x-country. Nice airport and plenty of places to fly nearby. You'll enjoy flying down Susquehanna river. The ridge by the airport does cause some interesting wind conditions, not always pleasant.

Welcome to PA!
