Hello All,

Wondering if there is any insight on this request. Tuskegee University is launching their first ever soccer program in the school's 146-year history. We would love to have a P-51 Mustang (Red Tail) flyover before the first match in August. Very symbolic in that it's right next to Moton Field where the Tuskegee Airmen trained. Anyone have access to, or know someone with access to a P-51? I learned one should fill out paper work with the Air Force and FAA to make this happen.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Feel free to reach out.

I might know someone who could help, but it could very well be too short notice. I'll pass the message.

Call the Commemorative Air Force wing at Falcon Field in Peachtree City (South of Atlanta). They have a P-51 and this sounds like something they might consider.

The Air Force can’t help with a P-51 but the may be able to support with a jet flyby. Better chance asking the ANG guys in Montgomery; it’s easier to support in-state events for ANG units.

To actually request the Red Tail P-51, email exhibit at cafriseabove.org

To get military support for any kind of flyover or appearance, you usually have to fill out and submit a DOD request form 6-18 months in advance. No unit can participate in anything that wasn't officially requested and approved through the appropriate channels. Its not as simple as calling your local ANG unit and asking, they can't do it without orders.

CAF or other warbird support is a little easier, but will depend on aircraft and pilot availability. They typically expect at least some kind of donation to cover costs, unless it is something near or dear to them. Not cheap operating a P-51.

Another option would be a Stearman, BT-13, or AT-6. Those were all WWII trainers and they are much more common and less expensive to operate than a Mustang. I bet there are several in the area, but it'll take a bit of calling around to local airports to find one.

That's not strictly true. After 12 years on AD and 9.5 in the ANG, I learned that in the ANG there is always a way. In-state events do not technically require big blue approval, just state leadership approval (TAG). We did a LOT of flybys in Louisiana for things that big blue would have never approved but since we were the ANG and the Adjutant General asked us to do it, we did them.
