Is there a way to run Outlook 2011 in cached exchange mode? It looks as if Microsoft took that setting option out of the latest release.

I have an Exchange account at work and use additional mailboxes with hundreds of thousands of emails in them that Outlook is trying to download to my local machine. I want them to reside on the server only as I normally have internet access whenever I'm using work email.

Hey Jason..

I don't have a direct answer for your question but..

I just added the first exchange account to office 2011/mac and I see what you mean.. It started downloading the messages and I could not find a way to stop it nor could I find a setting to change the default.. Sorry I thought for sure that there would be a buried setting.

Good luck

Jon

Just got my first Exchange account ever (new job), and I have it set up in Mail instead of outlook... But only on the iPad so far. I'll try to remember to pay attention to what Mail on the Mac does after they're synced up.

Wow. I guess you're hosed:

Does Outlook 2011 have an option to disable Cached Exchange Mode (as you can in Outlook for Windows), so it does not copy everything to your hard drive?
No.

(noting that Microsoft should try harder not to make their customers do this -> :incazzato:)

I'll let you know if I can get Mail to do this, but it's gonna be a few days.

Thanks, Jon. I appreciate it.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. I came across the same info during my google search for answers. I can set it up in Mail, but Outlook seems to handle our stuff better since we use about 3 or 4 common email inboxes and a common calendar in addition to our own personal inbox.

You'll love the other Mac Outlook bugs. Try sending a larger than 500MB file w/ Mac Outlook 2011 to see if your Winderzzz Admins set the Exchange server up correctly, for one. (Mine didn't and don't care.)

After messing with it, winderz in a virtual machine with winderz LookOut (as in, "Look out, here it comes!") works best. Especially since our folk also added some fancy plug-ins to Outlook for message archiving to a "Mail Vault" system that replaces mail on the Exchange server with a link to said mail on the permanent archive server and buttons in Outlook to retrieve them or put them back.

At least it sounds like your admins got ActiveSync right. Ours didn't, so no native Exchange support for iPhone/iPad. They're using Good server and guess who sits on our board, but a former Board member with Good before they were bought by Motorola. Same silliness with McAfee the machine-sucking dog that it is... ;-)
