Cowboy - yeehah!
My dear old friend from Beechcraft has moved on to a more enlightened owner today. I'm cash richer, but plane poorer.

This time, I'm going LSA. Been investigating a Sonex, and I don't want to pony up more than around 40k. I also want something that two can ride around in with moderate comfort, and NO TWO STROKES.

Any planes I'm not considering within my price range? The Sonex doesn't have a BRS, and they don't recommend one, but that is one of the features I'd like to have. I guess in lieu of that, I could just fly around with a chute on, but it is not ballistic and my SO would never, ever survive a bail out unless I drug her out and pulled her D ring first, which is a lot of activity for a catastrophic in flight failure.

Home built? Add your own system to blow the cockpit open. Clip the D ring to something in the plane.

Hmmm. I never thought of that. Just put her on a 10' static line to the D ring and push her out.

I love it when a plan comes together. :D

Well, since my dad is building a Onex, and that's pretty close to the side by side version, I can see how it would be possible to jettison the canopy with a pull ring and just roll out the side.

He said he wanted to carry two people.....even with two FAA size people, you would be over Gross with zero fuel on board.

1300 GW (on floats) - 901 Empty (on floats) = 399

2 x 170 = 340

since when is 340 > 399 ?

It's overpriced for my mission anyway, and She Who Must Be Obeyed would nix tandem seating. Although I could let her sit in front of course, that might turn the tide, but it's still too costly for what you get.

Thought you were trying to go Amphib.

I was looking at the weight on wheels (although when I looked at the ad again I realize they didn't publish the MT weight on wheels).

1220 GW - 901 MT = 319 useful.

Except the 901 is empty weight on floats, and I'm fairly certain, although not 100%, that the wheels don't weigh what the floats do.

Searay is about the only thing that is LSA, floats, and decent performance. Prices are kinda high, but we'll see. Floats only would be too limiting. If I try to get amphib, it has to really be floats plus wheels too.

<edit: I am the perfect target market for the Icon, but there is no effing way I'm gonna drop coin on a non-flying plane that spends 80% of their budget on marketing.>

You are probably right...my reading comprehension was a bit lacking.
