Our public perception problem

Maybe it's just me, but I have met far, far nastier and more condescending people in the boating community than in aviation.

I take it you have been to a Laser and/or J24 regatta recently?

Another perspective…

pilots are, by necessity, more narcissistic than many. “How do you feel about having to be responsible for 300 lives?” “Doesn’t bother me at all, I reckon if I make it alive, they will too. And I have a well developed sense of self preservation.”

That’s narcissism. And perfectly fine.

Furthermore, pilots are anti-social. Not UNsocial, anti-social. As far as we are concerned, Newton can take his apple and shove it. I’ll defy gravity if I want to! THAT is a problem with authority….

Put them together, we come across as different, to folks much different than us. Shocker…

Do we really want pilots who DONT think they are God’s gift to aviation? Think about it. A little self centered confidence and unending can-do attitude are fine by me.

Ever meet someone who was a passenger and actually heard their pilot crying and muttering “I can’t do this…!” I HAVE!! Ya, all the ill will towards arrogance GOES RIGHT AWAY.
