OshKosh

Here's my experiences with places to stay (roughly in order of least preference to most desired):
Staying in a bedroom at someone's home:
Bad: Awkward and far from the airport.
Good: Nice bed

Tent camping in Scholler:
Staying in a bedroom at someone's home:
Bad: Awkward and far from the airport.
Good: Nice bed

Bad: Crowded, lots of party and Interstate noise (earplugs!!), and lots of non-aviation folks more interested in zooming around on their scooters.
Good: Cheap. Good shower facilities (at the right time of day), great for extroverts. Not too far from airplanes and lots of good walking exercise.

Staying at Oshkosh Valley School (OVS):
Bad: If in a room with 20 other guys, noisy. Have to shuttle over or drive to airport and traffic is bad.
Good: Wonderful people. Good breakfast/dinners. If in room with wife only, very nice and quiet. Good showers. Air conditioned.

Staying at tent next to plane (vintage):
Bad: Showers can be crowded.
Good: Immersed in aircraft, quiet, close to the action. So totally cool.

Usually I fly commercial to Appleton, rent a car then go visit my Dad in his summer cabin over near Tomahawk (fish, pig out on ice cream. fried chicken and fried fish), then drive over late Saturday to camp in Scholler (when wifeless) or early on Sunday to stay at OVS (when wife with me). Got to fly in with a friend one year and Vintage camping was very nice.

YMMV. :D
