After being at home for 4 weeks with my family, school closed for the rest of the year, being furloughed continuing for at least the next month, I just don't see OSH happening. The reality of our situation is starting to become clearer, no way will large crowds be allowed for sometime. Also the personal economic reality of being out of work for two plus months is painful. Even if OSH was held, this hit to my wallet would prevent me from attending. Sorry for the negativity, but it's time to put this out there.
I heard they need to make a decision by mid May. I would suspect that it is going to either be cancelled, or a much smaller and shorter event. Finchers crossed that it still goes on as planned, but I think that is a long shot at this point
With talk of the virus still not reaching its peak In different areas of the country ,it’s more likely to be canceled.
I've already scrubbed the trip. I am one of the thankful and fortunate, I am working from home (goofing off for a minute between tasks). Last I heard there were 600,000 infects Americans. That isn't going to go away before July. I'm not going to a gathering of 10,000 people any of whom could be asymptomatic carriers. This virus could easily end Mrs. Steingar. Heck, it could probably do me in too. I doubt I'll be flying to Oshkosh again until I'm immune to this thing one way or the other.
I am going even if its cancelled. I have the days off. Might as well be the only guy that went to Osh 2020
I had surgery the week before OSH last year. The streaming live webcams cheered me up while I recuperated at home. Sad to think there might not even be that this year ...
You won’t be alone. I’ll meet you at Ripon. We can take a few laps around the lake for old time sake if you want then we can freak out the contract tower controllers landing on separate dots simultaneously. We’ll just claim formation...it’ll be fine. Then we’ll quickly jump out at the north 40 and drink a couple beers so we can’t fly out when they try to kick us out. We can fine-tune it later.
Dude Let's make a plan. I have the PTO for the trip already. and we need to make the video "The only 2 pilots that attended Osh 2020" I'll sell you a t-shirt and you sell me one.
You won't be the only one! I'm going too. I'm going to sit at the spot that usually has my campsite and drink margaritas until I think I hear airplanes.
I bet I can get a hotel room for cheap. But for real though... Can I camp at the North 40 if the event is cancelled?
I bet you won't be the only one trying. So if (when) they do cancel it, I'm thinking they may end up having to notam the airport closed if they don't want a bunch of old men showing up and trying to camp under their airplanes.
Yea, it's been a lifelong problem, first with the typewriter, then the cigar, then the beer, and now this.
Nope. saw a podcast with Pelton, when asked about OSH, he said that the whole event, including camping is allowed by special permit only. Permit will not be issued if things are still closed or limited. Here is the link
Well, EAA just reached out to me to make sure I'm still going, so as far as I know, it's still on for now.
Talked to my event chair, and we're both incredulous that EAA hasn't called this off. We're lacking volunteers, and I doubt we'll be the only ones. If they go forward I think it will be the lightest attendance they've seen in decades.
There's no way it goes on IMO... I'm guessing they're taking this time to get all their ducks in a row just in case it can happen, and also in the likely event it doesn't. I'm sure they've had a lot of conversations with major vendors, planned what next year might (or might not!) look like, and all that.
EAA might not be the only decision maker. The State and City might not be thrilled at the prospect of thousands of potential virus carriers coming to visit. Conversely, I'm sure the city sees a nice bump in revenue during that week.
Another piece would be the houses that are rented out to airshow folks by locals so they can take a vacation elsewhere. If the locals can't leave to go on vacation, they can't really rent out their houses. Not sure how widespread that type of setup is though.
Reading the state's reopening guidelines, I think we'll be lucky if they allow groups of 10 by the end of July.
I see a video coming. Maybe some t-shirts too. Maybe we should make t-shirts for all the canceled events. Sun-n-Fun 2020 Where did everyone go?
My bet is on cancellation. But look at it this way, if we snuff this thing out proper and dead, 2021 OSH will be guaranteed to be a celebration of aviation for the ages. Won't miss that one.
If that even happens. If everything goes *well*, a vaccine will be approved a month or two before OSH 2021, so it likely won't be widely available before the show.
Herd immunity may be a thing by then. We had someone in our office test positive yesterday. Lots of panicky people running for the doors after that. Thing is, the infected person wasn't at work yesterday, so there wasn't a lot of need for people to freak out, but...
We had a guy at work test positive after he was at work for a few days not feeling well. That was over 3 weeks ago and no other infections happened.
