Operation El Dorado Canyon

Speaking of TF30 woes, good book if you ever get a chance to read it. Just full of short stories and excellent photography. “Tomcat Tales” on Prime another good documentary. Amazing stories.

That was future Admiral Red Best. He almost derailed his career over that statement. The actual quote was “Growing up I wanted two things. I wanted to be CO of a fighter squadron and to own a junkyard, here I get to do both.”

T shirt worn by F14A pilots flying the TF30. “If it says Pratt and Whitney it better say Martin Baker.”
One of my first assignments in test was validating NATOPS performance data for the TA-7C, which replaced the TF30 (dry) with a TF41 around the time I started. Digging back through old TF30 data I found the expected reports of compressor stalls and surges, along with a note that in the TA-7 the TF30 could not be reliably ground-started with more than 5 kt tailwind. o_O
