Operation Butt Freeze

James - People were flying aircraft in IMC long before GPS was available...maybe keep that in mind when thinking about aviating.

Yup, I know. Many, many safe hours were flown in the clouds (and at night over water) before GPS came along.

That being said, GPS does increase situational awareness, which in turn increases safety. If I were flying in a situation like night IMC over water (I'm strictly VFR for the moment, so I'm just imagining), I'm pretty sure I'd prefer to have a GPS, even though those before me didn't. Doesn't have to be an IFR GPS. A VFR unit will do just fine. It's just another tool in the toolbox for those sticky situations, and a pretty sharp one at that.

you must laminate ASAP
I laminated my last paper cert because I had access to a machine but I never heard of anyone laminating the plastic. It was cool when I got my paper cert back from the FAA after processing my plastic.
